Turn signal Questions / Brake Qestions?

« on: May 21, 2008, 04:00:28 PM »
Ok, going down the line of problems of the beetle, I have no turn signals or brake lights, I have changed the bulbs, relay and fuse. (I changed ALL the fuses, the P.O. had a gum wrapper around one of them!) I am getting parking lights on the front signal 2 element bulb, just no signal power.  Havent had a chance to see if sone idiot has cut a line or something, but that is next.  The sockets appear to be ok, I'll still sand them out though.
Any of the other ususal suspects that I need to look at.  On the drive home the other night I could have sworn that I saw the brake lights work at least once.  I just wonder if the brake sensors on the Master Cyl. are shot or if the problem I am having with the pressure is causing them not to work.
Any way, if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate them.
I was going to try to have this ready by my birthday (may 9), but that didn't happen.

Just the brakes and the turnsignals and I'll be cruising...

Oh yeah,
The little green light in my '72 AStick Bug lights up like it wants to blink when I use the turn signals, but just stays lit up....
I also attempted to replace the signal relay and it made no difference.
Thanks,

Brake lights are working.  I think the problem was using my 4 yr old as a spotter for the brake lights when I had the lens off yesterday....
They worked when I backed the car up tonight to get it near the shed to jack it up....

I'll check the sockets, grounds, but as stated the parking light side of the light is getting a ground because it is lighting up.

I'll sand and clean the poz. tips down in the sockets.  Is there something that I need to look at in the steering column.  I assume not since the switch is activating the speedo light.  I have a new blinker relay...
Thanks for the info though.
Is there a specific ground that I need to check?

I am VERY interested in getting the brakes and this straightened out so as to start to drive it.
Take care.

If you don't have good color coded wiring diagram, this will come in handy . . .

http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/bug-72.jpg

Anywhere there is a push-on terminal in the wiring, there is likely a bad connection.  Keep in mind these connectors have been exposed to the air (and more importantly, the moisture in the air) for over 35 years.  Once they get a good layer of corrosion on them, they don't conduct current quite as well as the use to.  If you have an electrical problem on an old VW, most of the time it's either a bad ground or the results of someone trying to re-wire a bad circuit . . . which was probably due to a bad ground.  The other common culpret is corrosion on hot terminals.

When I got my Dasher, one side had a headlight on dim, the other had one on bright.  One tail light worked, the brake light on the other side work.  One of the marker lights worked.  The dash lights didn't work.  The right turn signals worked, the left didn't.  The dome light and the radio didn't have power.  I fixed everything but the dash lights by sanding the fuse terminals and replaceing all the old corroded fuses.

Once you get power flowing like it should, coat your terminals with dielectric grease . . . it'll seal out the moisture and keep the corrosion at bay for several years.

I went through the same thing on my 69 beetle and i had to fix the emergency flasher relay and make sure that it is grounded right. After that they work fine.........

Road kill was right, it was the hazard switch and the flasher.
I am just finighing this thread so others can know the outcome.
