Tune up question?

« on: April 01, 2008, 01:33:58 AM »
Can any one give me a good idea who or where i can get my 1969 bug checked out to see if it needs another tune up or just a tweeking here or there to get it running right. I have got all the lights working correctly, the turn signal switch replaced ( and working ) and the other little things i have got advice here from all the great people. Heck i even just got an original 1969 am radio that i am going to install when it stops raining. I need a speaker to replace the one in the dash though. But if any one has an idea who can help me on the tune up or such i would be happy as i do not have the timing light etc needed to do the job. The last time i did one ( with help ) was in the late 1980's..........Rob

Here is a new shop that has opened up, unless one of our members wants to chime in.

Rob, Call Rick Swafford at the VW dealership and see if he can help you .
I would do it for you except that I am playing catch up with stuff I have had since last fall. I have worked with Rick and he is very good.
I don't know anything about the new place or what kind of work they do. I haven't talk to anyone thats had work done there. With their phones cut off, it doesn't sound good, but who knows ?
Chatt. is in a world of hurt  for a FULL service independent shop since Jim closed and retired.
If the new guys want to stay in the game, they better get a little less anonymous, keep the phones hot and do a little P.R. work plus advertising.
I'll be glad when I get my garage built.

Thanks for the help guys. When the bug ( aka Roadkill ) was running great i had run down to find the new shop there on hawthorne street and could not find a thing so i do not know about them till some body can get a call through to them but i will keep checking on them. I will definately call Rick at the dealership to see if he can help. I think it is something easy to adjust but out side my ablity to figure it out at this time. When i bought the bug i had it fully tuned up with new plugs, wires, points etc and it ran great for me to drive but due to a problem with the new breaks ( found a retaining clip had come loose ) i had not drove it more than about 400 miles in the last year. Recently it starts great and sits and runs for about 2 minutes and then slowly dies out. I do not know if i just need to fill up the tank and try and drive it or what. So there is what the problem is. If any thing pops into your minds what the problem may be that would be great as it just sits there in the drive way stairing at my house.... :(

Rob , Before I would do much of anything I would fill her up with fresh fuel and drive the Booger and get the cobwebs out and see what happens.

I have one out of a 68 that you can have.  I have never tested it, but it doesn't appear to be busted.
