Alternator? Make sure thats what you want because there was the generators and then two type of alternators- one that was internally regulated and one that was externally regulated. If its an externally regulated alternator, it only happened for 1 year (well two half years or something...).
I did it on my baja and did it this way:
Large gauge (maybe a 10 or 12) wire from the screw terminal (B+) on the alt to the battery. The D- plug goes to the brown wire on the regulator. The D+ plug goes to the red wire on the regulator and the idiot light wire taps in. and the DF plug goes to the green wire on the regulator.

Hope that helps you figure out what you are trying to do. You might consider getting an internally regulated alternator because its soooo much easier to wire up. Then again, the $30 regulator is cheaper than a $100+ alternator...
