Tires for my 1973 VW Westfalia

« on: March 18, 2008, 12:52:18 PM »
good afternoon,

finally the dry rotting has won.
I have to break down and by some new tires.

From the factory they installed 185/R14 on the van and I am driving 195/R14 right now. Looking around i could not find a lot of places where I could get any reinforced tires and if so they were way too expensive.

My questions would be:

1. Do I need the reinforced/radial type tires at all?

2. If yes where is a good place (other than coker) where I could purchase those?

thanks for the help.

Georg P.

Yes, you absolutely need reinforced sidewall tires on a bus. Don't settle for anything non-reinforced.

I bought a set of Yokohama Y356s from Tire Rack and they've lasted a really long time.

I have always had good luck with Continental Vanco-8's which can be purchased at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Continental&tireModel=Vanco-8

I believe Walmart can also order the Vanco8 tires that Brian posted.

If I'm not mistaken, Continentals are VW OEM tires, they would be a good choice.

I've had both. The Yokos do wear long and show no signs of dry rot after over 7 years in the weather. However, they're worthless in mud/snow. The Continentals are m/s rated and ride about as well. I didn't have them long enough to say if they wear as well, though. The Yokos look more appropriate for a T-2 bus and the Continentals have a more modern look (if that matters).
