Tires for a 73 Bus

« on: September 22, 2004, 09:42:12 PM »
Homer needs front tires.  He also needs a front end alignment.  Kyle and I set the tow-in with a tape measure after I replaced the tie rods . . . we got it close, but not quite close enough . . . the tires are wearing on the inside . . .  but I know how to fix that.  I'll take to Doyle's one day next week when I'm on vacation.  But, I want new tires on it when I take it.  I know I need to get re-inforced sidewalls . . .  I know what's on it now . . . what I'd like to know is what do you guys with late bay window buses recommend?

Zen, go to www tirerack.com and order them there. You can get the reinforced sode wall tires there for $50 each and have them delivered to your door in 3 days. Russ bought a set for his old bus and they were $237 for 4 delivered.

I don't know of any place locally where you can buy the reinforced tires. :(

I think mine were from Tire Rack, too, or Tire Direct, one.  Yokahama [###] something-it will probably be the only Yoko 185R14 size they have.  You've gotta get these-they say "SUPER VAN" on the sidewall!   It would be perfect for Homer.  They wear and run well, too.

I haven't seen them yet and I don't have a clue what brand they are, but Reece's Tires in Summerville called back yesterday and said they could get 185-14's with a re-inforced sidewall for $35 each.  They're picking up a set from the warehouse today. . . I'll let y'all know more about them Saturday after I've actually seen them.

I went to Reece's this morning and they weren't able to get the re-enforced sidewall tire.  The warehouse had told them they had some, but they didn't.

I needed to get tires on it this weekend and since Joy has missed a good bit of woirk with her surgery, money is pretty tight.  So, I just went ahead and got some 185/75R14 Kumos.  Not really the tires I wanted but they were cheap enough.  Only $140 mounted, ballanced, new valve stems, old tire disposal, tax . . . etc.  Even though they aren't reinforced sidewalls, it greatly improved Homer's handling.  I put it through the paces on winding backroad coming home and it sure steers easier, rides smoother and grips the road better now.  They are 100 times better than the worn out (wire was showing on the front ones), wrong size, off brand passenger car tires that were on it!  But then, I can't really complain too much about the old tires . . . they are the ones that were on it when I bought Homer.  I know I've put at least 60,000 miles on them.

After Bug Jam, I'll start saving money for a set from tirerack.com.
