Timing mark "jumps"

« on: May 14, 2006, 03:30:15 PM »
Hi all,

I'm trying to tune the Ghia and succeeding for the most part.  However, when I'm using the timing light the mark on the pulley appears to jump between two different positions - this isn't making it easy to tune as I don't really know which one of the positions is correct ;) It does this both at idle and at higher revs so I doubt think it's realted to the vacuum advance.

So, any ideas as to why it is jumping? Points gap is fine, most of the ignition parts are fairly new (dizzy cap, rotor arm, HT leads, plugs, points).

Thanks!

Matt

When you say it's jumping between two different positions . . . is it constantly jumping around over a 2 or 3 degree space or does it sit dead on one position and then jump to another position and sit there?  How many degrees apart are the two positions?

And what are the degrees of the 2 positions ?   0°, 7 1/2°,  10°?

Zen, it's two distinct positions that it's jumping between, although it doesn't stay in either position for more than a second or so.

David, I haven't measured it very accurately and my timing light doesn't have a degrees knob on it, but I'd guess that it's jumping 3 or 4 degrees.

Matt, Break out of some those left over Pound Notes and do youselve a favor . Buy a timing light with a advance scale. Sears has a decent one for about $60. Stay away from the one from Harbor Freight.
How many mark/ notches are on your pulley and where are they ?
Thought  maybe I marked your pulley when you came over here last summer.
As far as your "bouncing" light goes, You may have a dist. problem like worn out shaft bushings, fly weights sticking or weak springs on same. You can not set the timing correctly with this problem with or without a proper timing light.

The timing light I have is the Craftsman but without the scale.  I'll grab hold of a more useful one.

Looks like the engine rebuild is becoming more of a certainty ;)

Matt. When it comes time to rebuild your engine, you need to learn to do it yourselve. I can help you out .   You do it and I will sit down and watch. I can tell you what to get and what to do and when to do it and keep you out of trouble. Its not that hard to do.

I'm intending to do as much of it myself as possible, only way to learn :) Thanks for the offer of guidance, it's much appreciated!
