Thermo Couples in the TS2 port on a Type 1 engine.

« on: August 16, 2010, 10:36:24 AM »
Any one have any idea what the thread and depth is on TS2 sensor for a type 1 head.
I am trying to see if I could install an off the shelf thermocouple hilder into this tap to send a reliable signal as to what the head temps are.
I have an aftermarket set of heads on the ASBug and was wanting to wire one up as a guage feeder.
The stuff is off the shelf, if it'll fit...
Just curious if any one knew the answer on threads and depth of the sensor.
I have seen them for a T4 engine, but have never seen a T1 TS2 sensor...

Get you a Dakota Digital gauge and sender, it's a thermocouple that goes under your spark plug.

i had i little heat sensor that went on the shroud of the #3 head tin screaw and tapped into the oil pressure sending wire,  dont know how reliable that was.

My theory is ignorance is bliss.  Just run it till it breaks . . . and build another one to replace it.  It'll cost you more in the long run that way, but the times in between parts breaking are much more relaxed!   ;D

Just drive the thing unless you just want to have a excuse for getting more grey hair wondering why your engine is running a little hotter on a 100 degree day than a 80 degree day. Of course that depends on if you have put all the engine tin back on and the ing. timing is correct and you have a good comp. seal. Oh, don't forget to put the cooling fan back on. ;D ;D

I guess a better question would be if the TS2 port is a good location for a thermocouple.

The reason is that there is a company we use here at work that provides us the easily replacable bayonet mounted thermocouples.  I was hoping to place a thermo couple mount in the TS2 sensor hole and leave it permately mounted.  This could then be used to quickly mount and dismount the thermo couple / guage from car to car.  Just a small hole in the tinwork and a 1/4 " pipe setting just proud of the tin.
I could use this to determine what my actual temps are on the cars, I know the ASBug doesn't like it when I go 80 ish on the interstate when the temp is over 90.
I have to keep the speed down to like 65 to 70, otherwise the engien gets hot and doesn't want to idle right, oil..  It is too hot to touch on the dipstick comfortably, but I cannot tell what the actual temps are.

Any way it was just a thought and I wasn't wanting to go the spark plug mounted route due to the fact that they tear up...
