Other than running them , how can you test to see if heater boxes are leaking on the inside?

If they were off the car you could probably smoke -pressure test them by closing off one end and using some kind of smoke tester or a home made device on the other end and see if they leak into the heater box portion.

I would pug the ends with rubber and pressure test it.
-If you find that they leak, they are garanteed.

No leaky on J pipe inside=no leaky in heater.
