Tech questions '74 super vert - (updated 22 July)

« on: July 20, 2010, 01:37:45 PM »
OK,
Working on the new Vert and the brakes are funny.  The PO said he had bought new rubber hoses and a new master cyl (in box not installed) because the front brakes would lock up.  When I questioned him further, he stated that they would unlock if the pedal was "pulled up".  I checked the pedal cluster out and the pedal is pretty stiff to move, do-able, just stiff.  I soaked the assembly down in PB blaster and liquid wrench and it is SLIGHTLY easier to move, but is still tough.  It also appears that the spring is roating with the brake pedal, like it is broken.
I need to know what years will have the same pedal assembly as this 1974 Super Vert.  I have a 1974 std. beetle body at the PO's house still that I am hoping is the same.
Any one know or does any one have an extra late mode assembly that will fit?

It appears that I have to pull just two bolts out to remove the assembly (and take the throttle / clutch cables and brake linkage off... Right?

Thanks,
KC
Hope to drive the vert to the next cruise in....

KC-

Yep, two bolts, undo the accel. linkage, clutch cable (go ahead and pull the wing nut off at the back, you will need the free play) and the brake pusrod comes out with it.  Try and take it off to soak it down with PB blaster, sometimes that works better.  While it's out, look closely for cracks in the pedal arms, esp the clutch pedal.  I don't know if std beetles and supers use the same pedal assemblies, the master cyls. are different, so i assume that the pushrod may be different as well.

I spent 2 hours Tuesday night installing the new fuel lines and gas tank in the SB.
It now runs w/o an electric pump.
The tail light wire is burned up behind the tar board for the Pasengers side. It lets like .25 volts through. The plastic clip behind the tar board was melted slightly as well. I need to run a new wire (grey one) to the rear light. The wiring diagram states that the next junction block is below the passenger's seat, but I cannot find it... Are Verts different from regular SB's?
Any and all help is appreciated.
KC
