fuel pressure...Hmm.   I did stick a fuel injection gas tank in Stupie this year.  I had to plug up the return tube in the tank and SmellyEngineer  the gas line a wee bit..  The electric Fuel pump has seemed a bit wimpy but it does get the petro to the filter at the Carb

I'm thinking that all the JP weld that was in the old tank disolved and is cruding up the jets and things in the carb.  I need remove the mixture and idle screws and blast some cleaner in there.   Ah heck.  I just should pull the thing off and take it apart for a good washing.   sc

I ripped off the carb and took it apart today.  I popped the top and the float chamber was full of gunk at the bottom. Sent a sample to lab..The report says its disolved JP weld.   maybe that bottom jet was clogged up.  I sprayed it out.  put it back together.  Stupie no start.  Got out and checked  things.  got back in.  Stupie no start.  Arggggg.  got out.  went back, the hot wire to the coil was off. Arggh!    So went a drivin around.  Ran ok.  still wont idle and seems to have dead spot in the pedal then   Vroom,  I'm accelarating great.  did not get out to the HYway.  Guess I'll set the idle up or something.

Sounds like a vaccume leak (at the boots?) and / or a case of 009itis...
Good luck, on ASBug when it wouldn't idle I changed out the clamps (cheap aluminum) with some nice SSteel radiator hose clamps... IDLES great now!

I gave the vac hoses a good talking to and tighted up rubber gasket things that connect the top carb manifold to the one that goes to the heads.  Still she saves too much gas at idle.  or conks out.   I think stupie dies when I shift and then reanimates when a pop the clutch.   I plan to take that big brass idle bypass  screw out and spray around in there.   I seem to only make things worse when I mess with the mixture screw and that 2nd one,  I can't figure out what the heck it ever did.  SC

Stupie starts up and  accelaerates great once I get her rolling,  just wont cruise of idle.  I get a hint of backfire now and then

thinking,  thinking...thinking about dinner.  no thinking about Stupie.  got him running,  reving the motor to stay going.  Sprayed carb cleaner on all the connections.   Listening for a studder .   could not tell.

Plan B    Maybe if I hook up my wet vac backwards .  it blows out the hose instead of vac'in.  I stick the hose down the carb.  shhhhh listen.   I figure maybe i could hear air leaking.   Nope.  so then I lay my hands around the fittings and carb manifold etc.  no leaky.   Stupi still no idle but starts up good.    sigh   Sc

Is the idle cut-off working?  Turn the switch on and un-plug -- re-plug the connection and listen for it to click open and closed.  If it's not pulling back the plunger when it gets power, you won't ever get it to idle.

Thanks Zen,   Its clickin  and I removed it this m orning and   sprayed it out with cleaner.

This may be important.   when it is first started and the choke is working.  it idles high and a  seems to go pretty well.    Once the choke falls off  it stutters when cruising and conks out at idle

Allright,  Happy days.    Justin gave Stupie a checkup  and says Stupie has the swine flu and we need to lay hands and heal him.  I'm ordering a gasket set  for about 12 bucks ,  but I need to spend 25  at cip1,   I figure I'll get some push rod tubes to balance out the order.   They sell all kinds,  Are the 3 dollar aluminum  ok  or should I get spring loaded kind?  sc

I've seen a lot of junk spring loaded push rod tubes and always told people to stay away from them, but a couple of years ago I got caught between a rock and a hard place and had to either buy some spring loaded push rods or pull the engine out of Homer at Funfest in Effingham, IL.  Mid-America had a set of aluminum spring loaded push rod tubes that were kind'a pricey (seems like they were a little over $50). . . but again, I was between a rock and hard place.  Anyway, these are great and they DO NOT LEAK!  Sooooo . . . either get the good (expensive) spring loaded tubes (1st choice IF you can afford them) or get stock steel tubes (2nd choice, but cheaper and work ok if you install 'em right).
