Stuck Brake Drum?

« Reply #15 on: November 09, 2009, 08:27:24 AM »
Mine is an old Snap-On AMC Hub puller that is great for tearing stuff up.  The last one i had the shoes were hanging up on the friction surface of the  drum (rusted to it to be precise) , and the adjusters wouldn't move, so i pulled off the drum which in turn pulled the shoes, and all of the retainer hardware with it   .... It can require some effort, but she hasn't failed me yet.

Sounds like the same thing that happened to one of the ASBug's rear wheels.  Pulled hub and all innards out with the stuck shoes.   Spring kits are cheap and you need new shoes and wheel cylinders any way... The rest can be beaten flat / vised flat again and then you can wire wheel your adjusters and LIBERALLY apply anti seeze.
Have lots of fun.  Mine attempted to push the axel out rather than let go of the shoes /  adjuster plates.

Thanks Rick, but sometimes trial and error is the best teacher. We used a home made puller with a 20 ton bottle jack. It took all the jack had to do the job.

I did buy a 70 Bug from Memphis. The stuck drum is on the 66 RatRod I'm building.
