Stuck Brake Drum?

« on: November 05, 2009, 02:18:49 PM »
I am posting this as Mike (Lola) and I have had a heck of a time trying to remove the rear brake drum off of his bug.  I found this on thesamba.com and thought I would share it with others.  I have not tried this yet so I cannot vouch for the results.

This what I had to do about 3-4 times a week when I had my shop.  I use my air chisel with a round bit slightly rounded off on the end.  My air chisel is a old long stroke Snap-on and not one of those wimpy vibrators they call a air chisel today.  I have never torn up a axle and never found a drum I couldn't get off even some late Van's although I have had some tough ones. Of course you have to have a compressor thats got  some CFM.
Mike, What is the CFM on your compressor ?

I'm not sure of the CFM, but it is a large upright pushing 125 psi now. I think I can get 150 out of it.

I think I may make me one of those tools. Heck, it cost $45 to rent a puller from O'rileys that didn't work. I think instead of welding chain to a rim, I'll try welding chain to lug nuts. What do you think?

I think you had better do that and not weld to my wheels!  Just kidding.  :D  :D   I was thinking the same thing.  If ya had a wheel that was screwed up beyond return, then yeah.

Its not so much the pressure as it is the amount of air it can deliver quickly .
Cubic Feet per Min.=CFM .  Higher the # better off you are. You data plate is on the compressor. Find that number and I will see if my tool would have enough "Balls" to do the job.
That puller looks a lot like the factory tool except the VW tool  had a lead screw and not a jack.   That round disc looks like plywood. Cost ??

The post said he had less than $30 in parts to make it, including the bottle jack. I think that if I make one with the lugnuts, someone else might need it. I've wasted $500 of my time messing with it.

Lets see. $500 would have rented your self a drag around compressor from a Rent-All  store , My air chisel and you would be in business and would have a bucket full of money left over and the drum off.
I'm not trying to be a wise-ass know it all but I have about 45 years in the trenches with this kind of stuff and learn new tricks even today.  I know more tricks with a VW than a monkey does with 50 yard of grapevine.  So before you get your pantys in a wad over something else please call me . I might be able to help you out and you can keep your sanity

PS , case in point. The heater fan on my '86 Dodge PU would not come on at times when I first start the engine. I looked at it for about 3 hrs and came to the conclusion that I didn't know Jack shit about this dang thing. I called Kyle as he delt and had a  lot savy on domestic stuff. Took about 5 min. to tell me what to do. Start the engine and if the fan didn't come on , turn the Ing. switch back towards stop just a bit and it should come and it did. Sloppy switch. Hadn't missed a lick in 2 years.
Bottom line--- find someone who knows before you get all P.O. or hurt yourself.

Dave, my compressor is a 60 gal. upright. The tag says 10 to 12 cfm at 90lbs. with a 125lbs at max. Will that do the job?

It might. Mine is 13-15 and it works but not as good as my shop compressor did. Might be a little slow [-o<

Just noticed this thread for some reason.  I own a hub puller that works wonders on seized VW drums.  Takes 5-10 mins at the most.  I probably shouldn't have told you that though Mike.

Glad you got it loose.

Well.............Mike and I were telling William about our dilemma at the cruise-in when he told us of his puller that would have it off in a jiffy.  I watched for about 4 hours Saturday morning as William's "puller" wasn't living up to it's name.  We had tried just about everything.  So, it doesn't hurt that you've told us cause we have been down that road.   :)
