Steering gone crazy..

« on: November 11, 2008, 07:33:51 AM »
Ok, my son's 77 westy that we have been working on for 5 months scared the hell out of me the other day. The steering has a good bit of play in it first off. I was cruising about 30 mph and the entire front end started shaking violently. I yanked the wheel to the left and it stopped. When I got home I climbed under her and had my son turn the wheel.

The point on the axel where the steering connects was moving up and down in the sleeve that is there. (Sorry if my terms are wrong) How would I go about stopping this and what else should I look for to fix this? I can't send my son down the road like that.

I would take it to R-M and let Rick put the Critter on his lift and check the front end out ,ball joints ,tie rod ends,  drag link. steering box, etc,etc seeing that you don't know the proper names of all that stuff. He does and can tell you what to do.

I will have to do that. We need to get new tires for her also. Thanks for the suggestion.

There's a kit to repair the piviot that doesn't cost too much . . . but if you've never done it, it's a real b***h to install!  Tie rods and the drag link are easy.  Ball joints can be done at home without a press if you have a good side grinder, lots of disc, a good hack saw, a BIG hammer, lots of determination and don't mind working your butt off for hours and hours . . . and hours . . . and more hours.  When you get through, you still have take it and get it lined up.

In other words, it is possible to most of the front end work yourself, but speaking from the "been there, done that" department . . . pay a good mechanic to do it for you!

Ok, I though I might take a picture of what I think is the problem with his steering. I read somewhere that when it comes to steering up and down is bad side to side good. Well, this part in the picture goes up and down when you turn the wheel. What parts will I need to fix this or have this fixed. Thanks for the help.

Yep, that kit has all the parts to repair the swing lever.  I got mine from CIP1.com a couple of years back when I repaired Homer the Super Bus.

The old bushings are a real pain to remove and its pretty easy to damage the new ones installing them if you get in a hurry.  Read up on the proceedure before you start, have a manual with you while you are doing it and take your time.  It's not an impossible DIY project, but it's not easy.

Ok, I finally got the part in the mail from cip1. It only took a couple of weeks. Here is the question that I have. I am tight on money right now and was just wondering if anybody here has replaced these parts before and if they would like to do it again. I could supply food and drink to the person/people. If all else fails I will take it to Rick and eat beans for the next week. Now I will wait and see if my sob story works...

Well, I broke down and took the bus to Rick this morning. Good to see that he is staying busy over there. Now I wait and see how it goes.

I left all my tools in the bus so I dropped by R&M a few minutes ago and thought I would share the picture I took.

Just add a few water cooled and some vendors and we could have Bug-a-Paluza 12

Well, I just got back to work after picking up my son's bus at R&M to fix this steering problem. Let me just say I don't want to give it back to my son now. It went from 1/2 to 3/4 turn wheel play to about 1/1000. It drives like it is brand new. I want to just thank Rick and everyone over there for their great work.  :D  :D  :D
