Starting a '69 Bug that's been in storage for 10 yrs....

« on: January 04, 2010, 11:57:30 AM »
Here's the deal.  I have a '69 bug that has been parked a little over 10 years  (Dang, has it been that long since Lola ran?)  that I want to start up again and need to know what to do first.  She had just been serviced a month before that (engine gone over, 2-barrel progressive carb added, floorpan replaced, wiring cleaned up) then she started making a nasty metallic knock at idle speed (flywheel came loose maybe?) so I was forced to put her up.  She has a 1600 dual port motor.  Oil is still in her as I never drained because I always hoped to get back in there to fix her.  Need to know where to start or at least page numbers in Muir's book! :P

And also I need ideas and year match for tranny as I think I have a synchronizer out.  She grinded badly going from 1st to 2nd gear.

Thanks all!

I'd try turning it over by hand first, make sure that nothing is binding up/ stuck.  Then, i'd take out the plugs, suirt a little oil down in to the cylinders since they'll be dry.  put the plugs back in, make sure the carb is spraying, and start it up.  That's about it, i guess, just check the condition of the fuel lines to make sure you don't have any fuel leaks first.

Coolness.  Plan to start digging it out this weekend.  Right now it is basically a big storage bin for out-of-season kid's clothes.  Also pretty sure I have a synchronizer out in the transmission.  At least that's what someone told me.  They might as well have said my flux capacitor wasn't fluxing.  What years trans fit in easiest?  And any info on good realiable cheap ones?

Thanks again,
DJ

Reilable unfortunately doesn't usually go with cheap....

Get with David, a.k.a. The Godfater, a.k. retbugtech on here, he rebuilds them and does a darned fine job of it.  If you pull it out and take it to him, that's probably the best option for the money saving.

I would get the car up and running so you can drive it . I prefer to drive it myself to see what the problem is and give you a very close est. on repair cost. Just let me know.

Do you know any history on the Engine ?  You mentioned " had the engine gone over "  . What does this mean ?   How long did you drive the car with the knocking noise ?    When you get it started and the noise is still present DO NOT run the engine or drive it until you find out what the problem is.  You could do some very serious damage if it has not already.

Aw crap, mis-read the first time.  I thought the engine had been "gone over " due to the noise.  Def do a little checking before just cranking it up, pull the bottom screen cover off, check for metal, etc.  Like David said, you could make your headache a lot bigger really quick.

Motor was reportedly rebuilt in about 1990 just before I bought it.  I put probably 30k miles on her when I was in college then she started nickle and diming me so I had to get another vehicle for school.  My brother drove her for maybe 6 mos. then he got something else so she was parked around 1994.  I started collecting parts with the intent to get her going again and had the work done back in 2000.  Then my son was born so she's been sitting ever since.

The knocking was only at idle speed.  Any higher RPMs and it would go away.  My guess was loose flywheel or throwout bearing but haven't been brave enough to pull  the engine.  It just started one morning on the way to work and scared heck outa me.  I made it to work and back home, then she was parked.  I had blown all my cash reserves getting the 2brl carb, floorpans replaced and such so did not have the green to get started on a major repair with a baby on the way.

I feel your pain on the whole life in the way of the car thing.  I took apart my beloved beetle more than 10 years ago, still haven't finished it.  Never is enough time.  Of course, I've bought, driven, and sold a good 10 or 15 since then....

If you find any particles that have a copper/flaky look, you may have lost a rod bearing. Just guessing at this point
