Starter Problem

« on: August 12, 2009, 07:58:37 AM »
My son's 77 Westy won't start. Turn the key and the dash lights up but nothing when you try to start it. No noise at all from the starter. How can I test the starter to see if it is the problem? I am getting sick of pushing that bus to get it started..  :D

You could crawl under the bus and take a short screw driver and cross the terminals ( the big batt. terminal and the small push on terminal ) . If it Turns over you need to work your way toward the Ing switch up front.  Do the dash lights dim down when you turn the switch to start. If they do dim down that tells me you have power to the starter motor.  You also may have low voltage at the starter. If you have nothing but a bunch of sparks doing the screwdriver trick you can just about bet on the starter.  Maybe a wire fell off the starter. Let me know what you find.

I will try that after work. I am pretty sure the dash lights do not dim when you go to start it. I will let you know what I find

You know Rick, you REALLY under-estimate Smelly Cat.  I've got hunch the slow start thread isn't dead yet.

Well, I was in the process of replacing my son's starter and found a cut wire. Could it be that simple?? I replaced the wire and put everything back together and it started right up. Actually better than it ever has.. Weird. Now we go to take the part back, which has not been out of the box, and they(Mainly) will not take it back. They did not explain this when we ordered it. I understand that they will have to pay a restocking fee and everything but we were still not told. So, I have a brand new starter for sale if anybody knows someone that needs one.
