spring compressor question.

« on: June 30, 2011, 03:38:46 PM »
can a super beetle still be driven safely with spring compressors on the front springs. Want to see how the beetle drives and reacts and looks before i decide to spend the money on lowering it as i had talked about before. A friend has some compressors i could use. Just curious if they can be put on the springs, compressed and driven that way.

i would not drive it with the spring compressor designed to take the strut off with,  you really cant get the right feel by compressing the spring, i suggest put a couple a bags of concrete, that is how i losered my first beetle, did not have money for dropped spindles, in the regular beetle it fit nicely in the spare tire

Roadkill,
It'll ride like a turd with the springs compressed, the strut will be bottomed out all the time.  The kits come with a shortened strut so as not to bottom out.
There is some talk about lowering a SB by taking the strut housing and lowering the perch for the bottom spring and putting in a modified 1st Gen rabbit strut in the new housing.  Sounded like alot of work to save a couple of $.
The other problem is that with this set up there is a problem with the Cambur on the front tires.  The tire shop got the toe right, but the lower arms need to be about 3/4" shorter to get the cambur right in the front.  As far as I know there is no one making this.  I need a set of 71-ealy 73 SB control arms to have a shortened one made.
When I get a design loaded into CAD I plan on having a machine shop mill me some.
I'll keep youin the loop.

Listen to this man.  If you drive around with spring compressors on, we will have to change your initials to S.C....

See this is why i ask these questions. I get the answers i needed. By the way i had 2 bags of quickcrete in the shed and put them in the front. They layed great in there. Droped the front about 1 1/2 inches. Gives me a decent idea of the look and feel. Now i just need to figure out how to get a good turn on the back adjust a shocks on the back. Can not get a good turn but will keep working on it.

Jack the back up all the way untill the tires are just hanging.
This will take off the pressure from the shocks.
Then try to loosen them and report back.

I spent almost 2 hours this morning trying to loosen the bolts on the rear shocks this morning after talking to Rick from R&M about the best way to do it. I swear they are welded on. I know they are not but even with wd40 etc sprayed on there. I may have to go back and bribe Rick and see if he will let me use a lift for a few minutes so i can get a good crank and good leverage. But untill that time it is staying as it is now, back as i bought it.
