I was on my way to work and my speedo started making a whining noise and then quit, I am sure I lost a gear internally.  Is there anyone who can repair these or am I just better off buying a new one?

Hey Guy, The cold weather got you. All the lube in the speedo armature is long gone and what little was left froze up. You more than likely "pop`d the cable when the speedo locked up. I have repaired a "ton" of these over the years . You have to take the speedo apart and clean /lube . Get the speedo to me and I will repair it for you. Don`t spend your money on a new speedo. This is no big deal.

Mine has been making a winding sound of late too, but then quites down.
Can you pull the cable out speedometer and either squirt some graphite or a lube of some type in the hole? if a lube any certain type or does the speedo need to be taken out?
Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron, Hard to make lube run up hill. You can take the speedo out ,turn it upside down and try it, but it will be temp. The lube just does not get to where it belongs. You can try to lube the cable also . Doesn`t  always work though. Do something before the speedo locks up. It will break your cable. I can fix it for you. Have done a bunch.

At the very least, the speedo needs to come out and taken apart to get lubed properly?
Thanks

Do you have spare gears?  The little "plastic that actually should be metal" one that turns the odometer?  For a '78 Bus speedomer/odometer? I have one with that gear broken that I would like to get fixed.

If not you, then who? :-k

Travis , I have tried to repair those plastic gears with no sucess at all. They will "hang on " for about 15-20 miles. I don't have a clue where to get a brass gear . I have not checked to see if a gear from a old bug speedo would work. Didn't want to tear up a working speedo to find out.
Keep your fingers crossed 'cause your Super B has the same plastic gear. :(
