Is just not right.....New carb 30/31 new distributor OE QUALITY single vacuum advance....We set the timing and points according to the VW Repair manuel.  The flat spot is gone and appears to run ok just the back fire when you downshift. I just can't seem to get everything working at the same time.

Just be happy you are running and have a backfire....I have timed, tuned, timed, tuned, and still I have never heard this engine run.

I am going to let David look at it and decide what to do from there.  But as of my working on it for hours Friday and Saturday night, it doesn't look good.  I have never heard it run as I purchased it with the intent to rebuilding it.  But, I had hoped to get it running and get lucky.  If it makes you feel any better, you can point and laugh   :D

I'm not laughing. It's not over until the Fat Lady breaks a crankshaft or we find out that someone stole all the pistons

I've been thinking 'bout loading the Dasher on a tow dolly and hauling it up to his place and hang out 'til he installs the head gasket for me.  I know how much he LOVES Dashers . . .  I'd probably go right to the front of the line!!!
