Soda Blasting

I just took my 64 bug body and had it soda blasted.  they used "Baking Soda" instead of sand or pellets,   That is the way to go!!!  MAN !,  that thing looks good,  soda doesnt leave pitting like sand, doesnt create heat from friction like sand.  therefor, does not warp the metal , or leave that rough texture like sand blasting does.  they did the whole body, inside and out.  just took about 3 months work off my back.  yep, its been a good day.

Well !!! Thats a new one. Just plane 'o baking soda ?  How long did it take to do the body ?  I wonder what the cost of soda verus glass beads or sand would be ?  I also wonder if you could use this medium on a VW crankcase seeing how soda would disolve in hot water and not having to worry about" Left over glass" chewing up your engine. I would bet you would have to have a" Drier From Hell" on your blaster or cabnet. I'm going to have to check this out.  Thanks for the info on this Boone

well, you got me to thinking..  the guy told me that the reason this procedure was so expensive is because the soda costs around $120.00 per 50lb bag.   they usually get around 700 - 1000 to blast a car body.  I got a "Buddy Deal" for 300.

I just went to Google , and typed in "soda blasting" and WHAM!  a whole new world.

That is a very good idea David. I think you are on to something.  it would beat the hell outa the days I spent with a wire wheel, simple green and a tooth brush.....

almost forgot, to answer your question,  I had the car back in 24 hrs.  but I think my car got done on govmt time..  8)

Probably if you bought in quanity, it would be even cheaper.

It seems like I remember hearing that you have to throughly wash the car after having it blasted with the soda. Did the guy say anything about that. If so, you would have to get primer on it IMMEDIATELY after to prevent rusting.

$40 isn't to bad. I'm going to call the folks that I bought my big blaster cabnet (local) and see if I can use soda . Might have to change nozzle Dia. I'm not sure. I used a dip tank when I had my shop. Similar to Berryman "stuff". Did a good job,but still a pain in the stern sheets. I will try it out on some bad cases to see what happens. I will keep everyone posted. It might be a Boone to navigation. (sorry 'bout that)

Oh , I also checked Google and saw where they said " great for engine parts"  I hate being the last to hear about things like this. I guess I have been hiding in the woods to long.

Sure,  the place is called..  Eastern Tank & Utility Services.  near Princeton WV.   the number I have is.  304-324-2692
ask for Gary Wimmer.   Tell him Boone gave you the contact.

Here are a couple pics..  I sprayed it as soon as I got it home with some basecoat, just to keep it from rusting back so quick.
