Shifting shifter

You folks gettin' tired of seeing my questions in here, yet? :)

My question is this- my shifter is loose- very loose, and I was wondering where to start as far as fixing this problem. I can shift gears okay, it's just loose, that's all. Is it a bushing, or what? And, if so, how hard is it to replace? Sorry for the "newbie" question.

By the way, I really do appreciate all the tips and advice that you folks have given me here! Thanks.

First, be sure your shifter plate at the base of the stick is tight.  If that doesn't do it, it's probably the coupling at the nose of the transmission.  These are under the plate under the middle of the back seat, and not too hard to replace.  While you're in there, put in a new shift rod bushing.  You have to remove the shifter and pull out the rod through the front of the car (remove the cover plates in front of the gas tank and under the front bumper) and slide the rod forward.  The bushing is hidden in the center tube behind the shifter hole.  Do this and it will be ooooo...tight, baby!

I did this the night before last. The coupling and bushings were easy but be sure to remove the coupling when you try to take the shift rod out to replace the shift rod coupling. We forgot and just it got stuck in the tunnel right underneath the emergency brake. Finally got it unstuck. If we hadn't I was eyeing a torch to cut it out! By the time we got it unstuck we were so exhausted (at 1:30 am) that we just decided to leave it for now and replace it later. We did put the new coupling and bushings in though and it made a tremendous difference. After you replace those things and if it still seems too loose to you, you might want to add a short shifter. Easy install. :O

I can't speak about the bug shift linkage but replacing bushings in a bus is a "booger"!!  The engine and tranny both have to be removed. But once that's done, it's fairly simple. Did I just make it sound easy?? I don't think so.

You bug guys be thankful for those little holes built into your cars.  LOL
