shifting

« on: August 30, 2008, 08:45:53 AM »
Good morning :) here I come another one of my crazy questions
I drove FeeBee to work this morning for the first time. My question is on shifting. When you are just cruising oh about 30-35 MPH is it better to stay in 3rd or should you shift to 4th? And is it bad for the tranny to downshift into first with the clutch in? I've not figure out the gear to get enough momentum when making a turn. Understand what I am trying to say?
When you are making a turn you really can't get going in 2nd. Of course you guys understan what am I taking about.

My take on Shifting is alot like undergarments.  It "Depends".

Shifting is like playing music on a guitar.  Some folks play and drive like Rolling Stones and others  play and drive like Celline Dion,  When you drive like the Stones ,  your transmission will look like Keith Richards.

When I'm going down hill,  I can be in fourth  at 30mph ,  If I'm goin up hill,  I need more power so  I may be in 2nd if it is real steep and I have to accelerate up the incline.   If I hit the bottom of the hill at 40 in 4th ,  I probaly need to down shift to 3rd.

On other shift issues
I prefer to not have the the clutch pushed in.  If I sit at a red light ,  I am in Neutral with clutch out.  Maybe it saves the pressure plate and throw out bearing.  Same if I am coasting  to a stop.

On your turn question,  I would be in second and bog the engine a little and slowly give gas.  It seems like 1st is a hard gear to get in unless I force it.  and I don't ever force a gear that is balky.  SC

Ok well I play the guitar like I drive a VW...I can't so I have noticed you have to force it into 1st and I didn't think that was good to do. Thanks for the driving lesson. If you see me on the road might want pull off the road till I pass

Dont go 30 in fourth ever1 And never go 30 in 4th uphill!
30 is a weird spot in my bug, either reved out in 2nd or barely enough for 3rd. If it wont shift into 1st then your proably going too fast for 1st gear, never make it do anything it doesnt want to. They get angry when you do that, then it takes long talks with the Godfather to calm them down. Those therapy sessions can be costly to your wallet so be nice.

Dang It !!!   I'm going to explain this one more time.
#1-  You have a bad mainshaft bearing in the tranny.  Bad enough that the 2 shafts are trying to pass each other. You were told.
#-2 -   You have a broken shift lever ( Thats what you told me) and IT IS some kind of after-market lever and ITS is not adjusted right . When you get your NEW STOCK LEVER and it is installed I will adjust it for you.  This is no big deal.
As far as to what gear you should be in at what time is this:
           #1--  NEVER lug a Air-cool VW engine around. ( like 20mph in 4th gear)
#2--  They told me in VW school to never drive in a gear that the engine won't accelerate in.
The tranny will never down-shift very well from 3rd to 2nd until you fix the mainshaft bearing. Its always better to select 1st gear when you are NOT moving. Your 1st gear syncro ring will love you for that.
END OF THERAPY LESSON # 2

No it's just the ball that's broke off the shifter....I can still shift gears. I'm replacing it because the ball crumbled in my hand and there is no way to replace. Geeze Louise your grouchy today  And I believe it's you that needs the therapy  I just need the prozac

He's just waiting for his totty,he'll be fine after that.
I'm sure he'll be even happier when he has to pull that pretty fresh motor to rebuild the trans. He really wont be happy with the "lugging" beating that nice new thrust to death.

Ok things have to be 'splained to me in spanish. Yes I remember the conversation about the thngs passing each other but I really didn't understand what you were talking about so I quit listening  So for future reference it does not do any good to talk "shop" with me just say hey! the car won't shift good till you get that trans mount fixed. When someone starts talking over my head about things I really don't understand I have a habit of singing the National Anthem to myself so I don't have to listen..Kidding. I do try and understand but it's all greek at this point. I hope that everyone lives long enough to see me actually "get it"

So....is it Spanish or Greek? Ive heard of spanglish ,is there like a Spaneek language as well? I think David is trying to say go real easy on her,a transmission swap is probably in your near future.

I was thinking more of a "Bic Light" and end it all.
Now everyone knows why I'm "white headed " at such an early age.
