shaking

« on: May 26, 2009, 01:24:32 PM »
Ok the man at Doyles said my alignment was perfect he said I might just need the tires balanced. We had replaced all the front end parts and never had it aligned so I guess that is good. At around 50mph the steering wheel starts to shake not violently just like a dog shaking. The front of the car also appears to shake as well could this be the broken steering box or would out of balance tires do this? I hope the new box will stop this.

Update on brakes: For two days the pedal went halfway to the floor but today they are back where they belong. Thanks David I think you may have fixed it  But I am sure that is not normal

ANY excess play in the front end parts including steering box all the way down to tire air pressures/balance can cause the dreaded Super B  50-55 mph shimmy.  Any one item on the S. B. front end will give you the same shimmy.
So the bottom line is you have to check EVERY item one at a time and correct ALL problems at one time.  Case in point Smelly finds 2 bad ball joints and Stupie " shimmys   He replaces 1 (one) ball joint and Stupie still shimmys . He then drives for 2 month with the shimmy and in time replaces the other bad ball joint only to still have the shimmy. 50% of the time the shimmy has already caused the first ball joint to go bad  in a short time.
FIX EVERY THING AT ONE TIME OR AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN  or you will be fighting the dreaded shimmy forever.
Long Live Standard Beetles

If they aren't balanced, they WILL shimmy, but the wheels and/or tires can still cause shimmies when they are balanced.  They also have to be perfectly round and straight.  You can balance and egg.  It will still roll like an egg.

Like David said . . . ANYTHING that isn't just right in a Super's front end will have the same result . . . 45 - 55 MPH shimmies.  Replace all of the joints, all of the bushings, the strut cartrides, steering u-joint shaft, steering damper and idler arm bushing . . . the steering gear box if it's got any play in it, put good true round tires on good round true rims and have them properly ballanced, install a strut tower brace for good measure, and have it lined up correctly . . . the result will be one of the best handling cars you've ever driven.  At least until you hit a big pot hole. 8)

I think there is a shimmy fairy living in super beetles.  I'm going to the hardware store to get some traps.  I bet the company that makes tie rods and struts sneaks the goblins into SUper beetles  at car shows.

I had a 72 super with the tghtest, non-shaking front end i've ever had on one....

The cost:

...2 new Ball joints
...urethane control arm bushings
...KYB gas (GR2) Struts
...all new tie rod ends
...balanced the front wheels on the car, never rotated them after that...
...Alignment

Didn't ever mess with the gearbox, though.  The price kept me from doing that.

Maybe I will just have someone go over the fron end and replace what needs replacing just if you were guessing people....How much?

Also I am debating over the new steering box for $149.00 or the used one for $25.00. The use done looks good but what do I know?

new steering gearbox for $149.00...?

I thought that you had a super.
Back when i had mine, that gearbox from a couple of places that actually had it was over $500.  That price sounds like one for a std. beetle.

Seems that you may be right certubdec. After a new search looks like $349.00 for a new one. Looks like that tranny will have to wait

Sounds more like the price range i was thinking of....

The box in mine wasn't that bad, and my wallet was on a college budget at the time... so, no box for me.

here is what I do.   get some old leather gloves and some cable ties,  wrap the loose tie rods joints  with bit of  leather,   the fingers work well with tie rods and you need the palm of the glove for the ball joints,   Wrap the parts and then secure with a cable tie or 2.    Bike Inner tubes also work or a combo of both.  SC

Then just have someone dial 9...1...then wait for just the right time to hit the final 1.....
