RUSTTTT

« on: February 25, 2013, 07:46:27 PM »
I removed the body from the chassis this weekend on my 68 beetle. The mounting locations were so rusty that some/ a lot of them came off from the body while backing out the bolts. The four large bolts up front we're so bad they had rusted into a big mess that didn't even look like bolts anymore. Is the body a total loss or is there something I can do? It's a rat rod but I don't know how I would mount the body back on. Any advice from some veterans will be appreciated.

Ps: the pans are in great shape.

Do your best!

I have seen the front bolts (2 on either side at front of heater channels) turn out pretty rough. The two under the gas tank are usually decent, the ones in the heater channels are hit or miss. The ones on the back cross rail (in front of the torsion housing) are pretty straight forward. The rear body mounts are the bigger ones and can be a booger but not awful. If they look crusty, they will be tough.

Be careful forcing anything because if the bolt is rusted in place, chances are that "place" will spin out with the bolt.

I think as long as you seal up the gap with a new seal and get most of the bolts in, it'll be fine for a rat rod.

There is no longer a place to bolt the four larger bolts near the heater channels. The body was rusted so bad I couldn't get the bolts off and ended up using a grinder to cut them after the body was off. Could I make small brackets and weld the body on?

After seeing what Rick did converting a pile of rust back into a double cab truck, NOTHING is a total loss.  There are panels avalible for repairing almost every part of a Beetle body.
