Running Rich is NOT good - Be Careful

« on: February 27, 2002, 05:08:24 PM »
One of our newest members. Kevin "Moose" Wilson, has a 71 window bus. When I first saw the bus, I noticed it was running rich. After closer inspection, and attempting to adjust the carb, I realized it was dumping a ton of gasoline into the cylinders. We pulled the dip stick and smelled the oil but it didn't smell at all like oil, it smelled like gas and was real thin. We drained the oil/gas out of the crank case and replaced it with fresh oil. Next we took the carburator off and took it apart. IT WAS NASTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(    We put the carb in carb cleaner and let it soak for about 48 hrs. A rebuild kit came from Tri-State Imports, Joe Kirkpatrick, and Joe even helped in putting it back together.  (Service with a smile)

We don't have it back on the bus yet because of the weather but my main concern is if any damage was done to the engine internally because of the tremendous amount of gas that ended up in the crank case. :3dconfused:

This saga will continue and will post an update when it becomes available. :dozingoff:

If it's been running for any length of time with lots of gas in the oil, you can count on the internals of the engine being CLEAN!  It's not the "best" method of cleaning the gunk and corrosion from your engine, but it works . . . it doesn't do the bearings a lot of good, but it will clean!

PS - wanna guess how I know this?   :lookaround:

Maybe I should have been more specific. Kevin's bus is a 1971 Delux Transporter.

I could add a name to this Perk but I'm trying REAL hard to be more sensitive :devilfire:

I don't know what kind of damage was done but right after we got Herman running we had a bad carb. and there was so much gas in the oil that it was coming out of the rear main seal.  Kyle replaced the carb. and tuned him up and he runs great.  Thought he would have to change the seal but didn't have to.  He marks his territory but we dont have to give him a transfusion.  He doesn't use oil or leak enough to change the oil level.  And he cranks right up when the temperature is in the teens.  Then again I could just be bias, he is one of mine.

:0 Oops!  I made a mistake.  It wasnt the carburetor that went bad on Herman, although Kyle did rebuild it.  The fuel pump went bad and was pumping fuel into the oil not the carburetor.
