Running cold

« on: January 29, 2005, 07:31:46 AM »
The Mexican Beetle doesn't come with any sort of thermostat and it's running pretty cold this time of year.  I think this is contributing to my idling problems.  I had to do another bottle of FI cleaner this week just so it would idle.  After I put it in I went out and ran it hard on the interstate and it smoothed out.  Even after that, the dipstick was just lukewarm.

  :angry1:
So, does anyone know any GOOD way (go ahead and submit the jokes about  stuffing a rag in the fan or removing tin if you like, too) to get the engine to hold in a little more heat?    :lookaround:

Running cold ?   Well that is a switch.  I take it that you are telling me that your bug does not have flaps in the fan housing, thermostat at all . Hmmm . Is it possible to install them?

A "power pulley" causes the fan to turn slower . . . the intent, as I understand it, is take HP that would normally go to the fan and transfer it to the wheels . . . If you're only planning on going 1/8 or 1/4 mile, it might be ok, but it's not something you normally want to do . . . but if your setup that was designed for Mexico can't heat up enough in this kind of weather, that might be a solution . . . you'll just swap pulleys ever couple of days as the temps go from the 70's to the teens and back.

I really don`t know what to say about this.  I never could tell a lot of difference with or without flaps or thermostats other than maybe the engine would warm up a little faster .I would think if you used a power pulley it would put a little more heat in the engine maybe , but I think it would also slow down the volumn of air/heat going into the car, but not by much. I wonder if there is any difference in the Mexican fans Vs U.S. or Euro fans ?  If your car has vents in the deck lid and under the window you could try blocking off the deck lid vents only. Bugs ran for years without deck lid vents before 1970, but without some kind of temp. gauge to moniter things ,I just don`t know. If it was my car , I would more than likley try it for a mile or so then check on it. If your heater starts working really good , you might be overheating the engine.  It would be nice to know what the oil temp. is running as you are now.
Anthony, You are the first person to come up this problem that I can recall. :?

Yeah, a gauge panel and some gauges for things like oil temp have been on my "oughta get that" list for a while.  I've thought about blocking out the vents, too but am leery of sucking whatever I blocked them with into the fan (which, admitedly, would solve the warming problem).  I've had to replace the alternator.  The fan and shroud are like a lot of things on this car-almost-but-not-quite-like a 70s car.  The fan doesn't look any bigger.  I can't find any provision for mounting a thermostat or flaps.  The power pulley is something to think about, though!

I ran across this interesting piece while searching the internet trying to find out the diameter of a stock pulley.

Heck Fire !! I thought everyone knew that. I use to spend hours calculating  things like that .  YEAH RIGHT !!    I use to get into a lot of disscussions about this very subject. No one had proof one way or another. I think most people just thought you lost a lot of cooling at highway speeds. If this fellow is correct in his test, I guess not. I worked with with a guy years ago who had a wonderful command of the kings english who informed me that he knew for a fact : That a VW fan would "Decrapatate" at high RPMs . If this means the VW fan will "take a dump" at high RPMs , I suppose he was right after all.
Thanks Zen for finding that info. Very interesting. I think I will print that out and put it in my records under the " A Mystery Solved" file.
