Rrrrrrrrrrrrv noise when gas pedal is let off

« on: September 06, 2009, 09:08:33 AM »
Since they great Stupie engine repair weekend,   there is a  Rrrrrrrrrrrrv noise when gas pedal  is let off,   Maybe its been there all along and I could not hear it in the past  due to the exhaust  noise.    I think it goes away when the engine is under a load,  ...  If its in neutral and I rev the motor.  it goes   Vrrrr   Vrrrr  like maybe the cooling fan is slightly rubbing.    Or maybe a bearing in the altenator.,  I can't pinpoint wear it is,   shakin the fan dog house does not change it.   Any thoughts?   SC

By the way ,  I went 60mph the other day

Try this . While in neutral and you are hearing the "noise" , mash the clutch pedal down  and hold it there (don't move the shift lever) . If the "noise" goes away and returns when you let the clutch pedal back out you could have a Main shaft bearing inside the tranny thats bad.  Again do not move the shift lever. Always have it in neutral and the car not moving.

When its in gear and I let off the gas  I hear it,

When I'm coasting in gear I hear it

When its in neutral and rev i hear it

It goes away when  I accelerate or cruising

Does that help any

Not really .  Test it like I said please. When you are driving  there are several other bearings that come into play and that makes its harder to tell which one it is. You don't have to move the car one inch to tell which one it is. So do like I tell you.  One repair is fairly reasonable and one is high dollar if it is the pinion bearing or the ring and pinion gears.  :?

Check and make sure there isn't anything in the fan . . . leaves, paper towels, plastic bags, beer cans, rats, etc.

Indeed check the fan but I'm still betting on a bearing. I could be wrong as I'm not standing there.  Just do the little trick I told you to do and that would tell the tale.

well it wrrs whether the clutch is in or out.   sitting still.  it does not wrrr idleing,  just when I rev

I think I'll pull the fan pully off and see if the noise goes away

I also have not  fastened the 4th trany-engine bolt yet that is near the oil cooler,  It was a bugger since it was getting dark when we threw the engine in.

Mosquitoes are bad around here and they like how i taste,  I'm out of bug spray,  Bo and gas does not seem to deter em

OK Thats a good sign.  Tranny is more than likely just fine.  Do what Zen said and look for something in the fan.  Even a tree leaf can make the noise along with the paper towel you last checked the oil with.  Go ahead and take your belt off. If the noise is gone, at least you know where to look .  Trash, bad gen.brg, loose gen.tin ?
I wouldn't sweat the top bolt to much.  I would bet that at least 70%-80% of the street Bugs don't have that 4th bolt or nut

I got some bug spray,  so I braved the great out doors and  took off the fan pulley belt.   Stupie would not start,  Oh, well,  May out of gas.   I need to fix the gas gauge some day.

Started  checking things.  The carb manifold sure has alot of wiggle in it.  The manifold to 3 and 4 is loose.   Great,  It sure is hard to get those bolts tight.  Now they are tight,  I thing the vrrr sound was a giant intake leak.   I messed around with stuff,  and got that 4th bolt that holds the transmission  in.  Stupie sounds different  and starting to idle. sort of..... Hurray.   SC
