ridgid v/s spring clutch disks

« on: February 14, 2012, 03:50:20 PM »
Looking to get a clutch assembly for the Ghia. Will be running a 1600 DP on stock trans.
Which disk set do I need?
Springs or ridgid?
Thanks,
KC

What do you mean ridged ?   Does the tranny have the sleeve over the input shaft like a Super Beetle?  If so  use a 200mm Diapham pressure plate. All of the normal disc have springs these days  You should know all of this by now ;D

I have seen both. I know that when the ones with springs break, its just more parts to have going around in there. I never noticed the difference, but I could see how the one with springs would allow a little give between the clutch plates and the input shaft. Don't know what thats worth or how much it matters. I always just grabbed one and tried it. I am kinda curious now.

The discs are available with springs (softer engagement) or rigid (harder engagement).... OEM are the spring type.  I have the rigid type in the bus... it was cheaper... I like them either way, one's just cheaper than the other.

The only thing I didn't like about about the rigid plates is when they get old and get a little warped or get a little oil on it , they would shake your fillings out when you took off from a dead stop.

The spring set up cost just $5 more so I went with it.
Will let everyone know what I think...

Good point.. the gap between the two prices has really closed up... If I were buying one now, I'd probably go with the spring type myself.   :)
