Random chatter and Empi hating.

« on: November 09, 2008, 10:07:12 PM »
I have always been an advocate to not buy Empi stuff. I'd now like to sail to China and burn down the factory!!!
Several times I've gotten nuts and bolts that were not threaded or messed up. No big deal.

My latest episode involves a empi oil pump with oil filter combo. Got it new and had all kinds of clearance issues with a bolt on cam gear that I never had before. Then to beat it all as soon as we fired up the new motor the dang thing sprung a leak.
It had a inch long crack in the casting that didnt show until the oil pressure hit it. Somewhere in this delima a new pulley was purchased and put on. After the oilpump problem we had to take the pulley off to get a new pump in. I swear the thing is made of recycled bear cans.  2 lil Empi parts costing a lil over $100 bucks added hours of fun to my weekend. I'm scared to think what would have happened to my friend with his first aircooled VW if I hadnt insisted on rechecking everything 10 times.

Point is $100 down the drain cause I already know what the place I got it from is going to say about both issues. Crack in it ? You dropped it!! Bent pulley? You didn't use the proper tool to remove it. Wrong on both cases!!!

I'm over it! Empi sucks!!!I can see some lil airfilter or something but please stay away from these crap Chinese made parts!! It's gunna cost ya in the end and nobody is going to back this junk!!!

I've seen an EMPI filter pump that had at least a half millimeter clearance in the case . . . there is no way that thing would even think about pumping oil!!!

Back in the good old days (whenever they were) EMPI was top of the line.  The only connection to that company and the EMPI of today is the name and logo.  You might get lucky and find an occasional EMPI part that actually fits and somewhat serves it purpose, but for the most part, I'm with Bugnut on this one . . . Avoid EMPI . . . especially on any mechanical part that really matters!   8)

Old Empi is cool but who has the money to collect parts? New Empi is just horrible junk. I knew it wasn't any good to begin with but I never thought you could bend a pulley into a taco shape by hand!!!

I've gotta disagree.  Not all EMPI stuff is crap.  I've got a coffe mug with the empi logo on it that I've had for years and it doesn't leak or nuthin..... but, I guess, yeah, other than that, it's pretty much all doo-doo.

I've got a cool EMPI sticker on Homer's dash . . . something about not rolling down the windows at speeds over 120 MPH.     But come to think of it, I had to put double sided tape on it cause the back wasn't sticky enough to hold it on.

Shawn( the new owner of my 67)was down at the local parts store buying some spare tune up parts and mentioned the bad oil pump. The owner told him to bring it back and he would replace it. Thats a new one. Theres no way I'm putting that thing back on the car but at least they did agree to give him another one. The pulley... well thats a lost cause.

Years ago I had a coffee mug that had a Type-4 engine on it . Every time I sat it down it leaked all over the table top to the point that I had to use a double hand full of kitty litter to clean the mess up. It finely "dropped" the handle off and I tossed it in the garbage can.  From then on the the garbage can leaked all over the floor and  kept catching on fire.  True story ?    NAW !   I only used one hand full of kitty litter.

You're just lucky that the handle seat didn't let go and fly through the body of the cup while you were driving down the interstate.
