Radio Codes

« on: September 17, 2009, 09:55:20 PM »
Does anyone know anything about the security codes for VW radios?

I've had this '96 Passat for over 2 years and the radio has been in the SAFe mode the whole time.  There's a guy on the VW Vortex forums that will look up the code for you if you send him the serial number from the radio and the VIN from the car.  So, I finally broke down the other day and bought a set of keys to pull the radio and popped it out of the dash.  According to the guy on vwvortex, the serial number should start with VWZ.  There's all kinds of numbers on this thing, but none that start with VWZ.

Here are some information and #'s I've found on it --

There are two small paper stickers (top and back) that say "HEIDELBERG NO. 23181" and a larger silver sticker on the bottom that says Model No. 161 035 180E and REF. NO. CQ-97FUV and Serial No. 23181.

That same model no. is also stamped into the side underneath a VW and Audi logo. Also stamped on the sides are "FA 09215" FAO1985" and "FF01476"

There is a large red sticker on the bottom that says "Aftermaret Equipment -- W.C.3 -- VENDOR CODE YPC -- Volkswagen of America, Inc."

Am I just overlooking the VWZXXXXXXX serial number somewhere?

you have to leave the key on for over an hour to get the radio in the mode to allow you to enter the code, if you can find the number or bring the radio and vin number to the shop i may be able to help you

If you can't find the sticker with the number on it then check the side of the radio - it should be stamped onto it.  It's hard to read sometimes but it's there.  Oh, once you get the serial number off the side of the radio and get a radio code for it, if it doesn't work, change the 7th digit in the serial number from a "V" to a "W" (or vice-versa) and try entering that radio code instead.  We used to run into that problem a lot.

I've been looking over this thing for a week.  I've looked under all kinds of lighting and angles and can't find any sign of a number that starts with VWZ.    Here's all I've been able to find.  Do any of these mean anything or do I just need to get a new radio?

On the left side (driver's side) of the radio "FF01476" is stamped in it. No other labels or numbers.

On the back, "FA08281" is stamped in it and it has a small paper sticker that says "HEIDLEBERG No. 23181"  There are several 3 letters/digits stamped under what looks like adjustment potentiometers.

On the right side, there is a VW/Audi logo stamped in it with the numbers "165 035 180C"  "FA 09215" and "an A inside a circle followed by FA1986" stamped below the logo.  There is also 4 marks stamped in it that look like maybe a mark for the corner locations of a sticker that isn't there.

On the bottom are two stickers, one red and one silver.  The red one says "Aftermarket Equipment -- W.C.3 -- VENDOR CODE YPC -- Volkswagen of America, Inc."   The Silver one says "Model No. 161 035 180E and REF. NO. CQ-97FUV and Serial No. 23181,” along with some info about the manufacturer.  The word "OPEN” with small arrows pointing out is stamped near each rear corner and the number “FA05350” is stamped in the center near the rear.

On the bottom is a large paper sticker showing the plug layout and a statement about Dolby Licensing.  There are two small paper stickers on the bottom.  One says “HEIDELBERG No. 23181” and the other says “YEFM02321” which I think is a “label number” since three of the other stickers have “LABEL NO. YEFM . . . ” printed on them in tiny letters at the bottom.  This sticker has the number in tiny letters at the top, but the label is blank.  Also stamped into the bottom is the number FA03755A.

Sooooo . . . am I SOL or what?

By the way, the VIN is WVWGC83A0TE034889
