Question from the newbie...

« on: August 17, 2006, 07:47:57 PM »
Hi all...I have a question.  I have a `98 GTI that the engine light has just came on, on.  I took it by Auto Zone to have the codes checked and it came up as engine code 1582.  Through further research, I found that the code was "idle adaptation at limit".  Can someone explain this for me?  I've been trying to find other info but, I've been striking out.  I've already tried vwvortex.com and couldn't find anything.  Any help would be appreciated.

Call Rick Swafford at the dealer. He is in the club and is a Tech at VW.
Rick can tell you all about your GTI.
By the way, Welcome Aboard even if your engine is in the wrong end of the car

When you showed up as "Karmann's Dad", several of us know of a guy who named his daughter Karmann. This has to be you!!!!!!! Nobody else in his or her right mind would name their daughter after a car.

Just kidding, I, personally, think it's a beautiful name that fits a beautiful little girl.

what some nut case named his daughter after a car, what did his wife think about that. How old has this little girl and how long how she suffered this.

Sorry, I've been absent from the forum for a few weeks but My computer fell victim to a Trojan that decided it rather liked the hard drive as a permanent residence.  To answer your question although its probably a bit late at this point, what that code means is that your ECM has reached its limit trying to adjust for the base idle.  A couple of things to check:  worn plugs, broken vacuum lines, and the most common culprit that we see with this problem, a dirty throttle valve.  You can remove them and clean them fairly easily, but if you disconnect the throttle body, the car sometimes will not idle after doing so.  It takes them a little while to "re-learn" where the throttle angle should be to properly idle...Sometimes on these model cars, we actually have to reset the throttle using the factory scan tools as they simply won't hold an idle after being cleaned until you "force-feed" them....
Side Note:  Third Gen. Jettas, Golfs, as well as early New Beetles, etc. get towed in all the time after having a battery installed for the very same reason...That's why your car doesn't run right after Auto Zone put that battery in for you the other day.
