The regular stock push rod tubes get sandwiched between the head and the block with white rubber-like grommets on each end (the seams in them face up). If you are talking about aftermarket ones, there are some that screw out like a shower curtain rod and then some are just spring loaded. Which ones are you talking about?

If it's a type 1 engine it doesn't have a head gasket.  If you are leaking compression between the head and cylinder, you may have a broken head stud, a stud pulling out of the block, or the head may just need to be retorqued.  What is it doing (or did it do)?

Why did you take the head nuts off for ? This a bug ?  Engine still in the car?  How did you get all the head nuts (8 of them) off without removing the sheet metal(jug covers) fan housing.
I think you may be in trouble now. You need to tell us what you are driving before you start tearing stuff off . May save you a lot of time and money.

Put them back on. Torque to 18 ft pd if you have 8mm stud, 25 ft pd if you have 10 mm head studs . You need to know which stud you have. Very important. You will have to re-adjust the valves on both sides of the engine. 006.

Lets hope that this will seal the head somewhat and doesn't have a head stud stripping out.  Most of the time its the 10mm stud that will give you some problems. You will find out when you torque the head because you can't torque to 25 lb without stripping. Torque the center nuts first. Keep your fingers crossed.

Thats good to hear. Don't run it long without adjusting the valves. That thing has to breath!
