Proper Replacement Automotive Battery

« on: March 24, 2009, 11:43:07 AM »
I have a battery that was installed by the PO which is too tall and in danger of shorting out on the springs under the back seat.  I think the proper size battey is what is known as a group 42 battery.  Can anyone confirm this and if so does anyone have a brand that they might recomend that is dependable?  Not all brands carry this size.

Belive it or not, Auto-Zone has one of the top rated batteries in the country.
Go figure.  I have forgotten what size fits a Bug or a Type-3.
Someone out there should know and I know they will speak up

I used to gripe about Auto Zone's sorry batteries . . . I put 4 in Homer in just a little over a year and had a 5th one going bad.  Then I replaced the Auto Zone voltage regulator with a solid state Bosche regulator and that 5th battery is still holding on . . . 5 years later.   :-s  Hummm.  The battery wasn't the problem after all.

I know that has nothing to do with the original question, but I just wanted to highlight the fact that it doesn't matter how good the battery is, if you use an Auto Zone voltage regulator, no brand is going to last long.

Or an auto zone starter.... or generator... but like both of you said, batteries are actually pretty good.  I bought a used bug once, the battery was from zone, and dead ( had to roll start the car)... took it to them, they said that they just needed to charge it up, even though it was a couple of years old at that time.... charged it up, still working when i sold the car 5+ years later....
 :D
If only all their stuff worked that well...

Another question off topic then.....

Being new to "old" Volkswagens,  Where can you find parts for these locally that are quality?  NAPA?  I have only found parts from places like ISP West and CIP1 on line.

When I had my first Super I went through 4 master cylinders from Auto Zone before I got a good one.  I no longer shop there.

Around here, I have stuck with Mainly Foreign, downtown, and Al Johnson VW in Dalton.... there is another guy in Dalton that sells parts for air-cooled stuff, and i know the name has been mentioned on here a number of times, but for the life of me, can't remember the name.
I try to keep the inner circle small cuz it's easier whenever i have a problem.

Just a consideration  but Optima make a great battery. Pricey but well worth it. and they come in shorter sizes to accomodate vw's. The one in my bug is 10 years old... I kid you not.

I have bought some parts from Joe @ Tri-State in Cleveland.  Have been pleased with the parts and his service.  Very nice guy to deal with.
