« on: March 02, 2009, 10:51:10 PM »
Is there a proper, correct, prefered or what else you want to call it carburator for a volkswagon beetle. With all the different types out there i was hoping that those here that have a lot more knowlege on this than me will voice up on this. I am doing some rework on my engine and i want to know if i should chainge this out.

Do not worry David, i am not doing anything major. With the big oil dump from the bad valve cover and the distributor going bad i am just fixing those things that need it. Such as correct original valve covers, the correct intake ( so i can take off the fuel pump if needed some day ) and the correct exaust. I was just checking on the carburator because there was bad part on the 30 pic i had on it and all the parts with my 34 pic were good. What i wanted to know was if i should use it or save up and find a good weber carb or what.

stock on single port would be your 30 pict stuff... 34 pict on dual ports.  there is no such thing as a good weber.... that should just about cover that.

Zenih NDIX and matching O10 dizzy runs like a Porsche, cost like one too.

The throttle shaft was good on that 30 pic you have so you SHOULD be able to rebuild it. Like I told you I dont thik it's the carb so much as the distributer. With the timing jumping all over the place how can you tell anything else about it?

If my wife still worked for Porsche i would go that way. She sill is good friends with the service manager and others down there.... Huh maybe i should think about it.........   . I will see on saturday if the carb needs the the rebuild. I have everything put back together on the engine and found some wiring behind the doghouse that was totally burned through. I fixed that also.

If stock is giving you trouble do not "upgrade" anything. It wont simplify your problems at all.Maybe you can sell it and buy a Jetta then you would be forced to leave it alone.

I had thought about trying to trade Rick for his jetta he has for sale, but like most of us he needs the money for his rebuild not another old bug. Maybe if he reads this he will put up some pics of the car and i can see if i would sell mine to buy it or trade me.............  :D

That bus aint bad saw it a few days ago,You can do it Ricky!!!! :D

I have no me time right now but if ya post up what your doing to Roadkill I'll try and walk ya through it. If you got the manifold on and the carb with no intake leaks thats a good start.

Set the engine to #1 TDC take out the old dizzie slide in the new one. Make sure the ofset tabs on the bottom lign up with the distributer drive gear. (they only fit one way) Once it's in instal the rotor button andd wigle it to make sure it's in all the way and seated. There's a small line on the distributer body the middle of the rotor should point to it at TDC. The car should start or with a tiny bit of advance should start.
Do this:
1. Check valve clearances .006

2. check points gap .014? look in the book I dont remember off hand.

3. start the dang thing and get a timing light you want to set it to 32 Degrees at full advance somewhere around 2500 rpm. no matter what no more than 32 at full advance.

4. then you can play with the carb. Lightly bottom out the screws and I mean lightly then back off 2 1/2 turns thats a good start point. afterwards the adjustments shuld be very small (1/4 turns or less) Turn the mixture screw just a bit until it idles a lil faster then back it off a hair do this until you find where it's best then turn the idle screw until it idles decent shouldn't be more than a 1/2 turn either way. Set it around 800-900 rpm and your good.

Top off on oil, close the decklid and leave it alone.

You can do this man it's not that hard. :)
