Problem with J tubes....Choke and gasp....

« on: September 26, 2008, 07:32:05 AM »
OK,
I reused the 1972 Jpipes on the ASBug.  Last spring = OK.  Now with the heaters on I am choking.  GREAT HEAT though!
Suggestions?
Should I Go with the High flow Heat exchangers and a Header?
I am not a fan of overly loud engines, but better flow usually means slightly better MPG.
Have a (COUGH, COUGH) nice day!

You can't have heat with "J" pipes.   You must have put your original "Heat Ex." back on. If you are choking on oil fumes/ gas fumes, the heat ex's  must have rust holes, cracks, exhaust port gaskets leaking, sheet metal  rusted out where the muffler connects to the heat ex's or worse yet gas/oil leaks in the engine comp. where the fan sucks the fumes in and blows them into the heater ex's. Leaky valve cover gaskets, outer push rod tubes seals can drip into the heat ex's via rust holes.
If the heat ex's are the problem, try to repair them or replace them with good used orig ones if you can find them.  The "new" after market and expensive heat ex's  suck.  They don't up fit good and they don't have the alumn. fin'd stove inside the sheet metal cover so much less heat is generated. A header won't help you because you loose some heat due to not having the upper heat Ex.  ( where the paper pipes connect)
You need really good heat ex's and a high quality muffler( can we say German) and a engine that doesn't leak oil all over the place( I know thats hard to imagine on a Air-cooled VW but it does happen) or just simply roll your window down and stick your head out the window or wear a gas mask.
Welcome to your first winter with our loveable little Bugs. :?
I don't know why we subject ourselves to this kind of abuse. I guess its Love

Ok,
Thanks, it is the Heat EX's.  I have new heads and gaskets as of march.  I'll check to see if something is loose, but it doesn't sound all that loud.  The muffler was new as of March and is german.  I am pretty much assured that it is the Heat exchangers.  My engine doesn't leak excessively.  I used the heat last march and no problems...
Any way, I am going to block off the passenger's side dog house and see if that cures the smell, if not then I'll know tha it is the Driver's side....
That leads me to the next question, how do you "fix" an enclosed heat exchanger?
Does any one have a known "good" set?
Thanks,
KC

You may want to be carefull what you block off, it could lead to overheating of that bank of the engine.  I have read that even blocking the heater flanges on the fan shroud completly is not recommended, plus if you remove or block the air the the heater box it will get too hot..just something to think about.  I had a Corvair years ago that would blow some of the hottest heat I have ever had in a car, but more than 2 minutes of it would choke anyone!!! Stupid oil leaks....or was it exhaust???!

Most of the heat exchanger problems are the sheet metal around the alumn. pipe/stove on the inside.  Check where the muff mounts to heat ex. If you can see daylight between the outlet pipe and the sheet metal, its a good place to let fumes in. Its the same story all around the heat ex. If you can shake the sheet metal and hear banging and ratteling, its loose somewhere . These things can rust out on the backside and hard to see unless you have them in your hands.  Any kind of oil/fuel leaks inside the engine comp. is going to show up with you up front no matter what condition the boxes are in.
It could be worse. Be thankful you don't have the old "DirtyAir" system where any oil leaks on the engine (cylinder base gaskets , push rod tubes seals, oilcooler) would leave you with a lovely coating of 20W-50W motor oil running down the inside of your windshield. A well done ,oil soaked rat trapped in those old boxes also add an odoriferous bit of charm on your journey . True story
