Well, I came to the realization the other day that Bugapalooza (and an 800 mile round trip) was nearing mine and my Fastbacks future.  In preparation for that I decided it was time to fix a few of the small issues my engine has, namely it lets more oil on the drive way than it keeps for it'self (I guess it's momma did a good job teaching it to share).

I've decided that a Type 3 engine is a lot easier (for those of us w/o hydralic lifts anyway) to pull than a Type 1 engine, although they are the same once you take the cooling system away.

Nothing earthshattering and noteworthy, just thought I would share

Also on the agenda in the next few weeks, replace the carpet & sound deadening (have to clean off a small amount of surface rust on the pans before it becomes any worse, you can't buy pans for Type 3's like you can for all other A/C VW's), still have to replace the windshield seal, I did the back 3 but still haven't found time to do that one, replace Tranny fluid with Synthetic, repack the wheel bearings, and half a dozen other little things to get ready to show the old girl for the summer.

You are going to drive "Molly" (if that's what you name her) from Mobile to Chattanooga?  That makes me feel so good.  I am proud of you and your decision.  That little car is going to make it, and take you with her.  If she is anything like my beige colored Fastback (aka, Molly) then she might need a rest now and then while on the road.  She tends to overheat on those l-o-o-o-ng trips.   :devilfire:

Be safe and keep us updated.

Boy that brings back memorys . . . of FL Bug Jam 2001!

Just a little advice . . . If you're planning on leaving on Friday morning, you might want to start installing the engine before dark on Wednesday.   :lookaround:

Well Travis, I didn't realize your Fastback was a Molly, maybe when I thought mine was telling me her name she was actually talking about yours?!  :3dbigsmile: (I'll have to rethink that).

Yep, you are exactly right folks, I'm driving the happy girl all the way up there and back, after using her as my daily driver for the past few months I have no doubt in her abilities.  I will try to put the engine back in before the day before though Zen, my cajones aren't quite as big as yours ;)

I'm planning on coming up Thursday morning with as much of lower Alabama in tow as possible, I've been making contacts here and I'm trying to get some of the local club members to join me. (plus I'll have my own "support crew" in a 2nd vehicle in tow, those wussies who don't want to ride 6 hours in a car older than they are, they know who they are :tounge:  )

Ok, so for anyone interested, I'll be posting a new link in our Tech Page at www.vwherb.com (www.tech.vwherb.com) showing everyone on the internet how easy it is to take an engine out of thier car, take it apart and put it back in.

Thus far, working just a few hours a week on it, I've taken it down to the shortblock, replaced all the seals (found the ones leaking so badly) and have it mostly back together.  I even took the chance to borrow a local club member's (down here in Mobile) blast cabinet and redid all my engine tin.  The engine should be back in the car by the end of the week.

I've also got a host of other things that are planned to be completed over the next couple of weeks before her introduction to the "show circuit"  You have all see the pictures of how she came to us (at www.t3.vwherb.comso I'll leave it as a surprise as to just what all I've managed to improve before her show debut, many of those things mechanical, a few purely cosmetic!

Since I can't find the inclination to work today I thought I'd post a before and almostafter pic of my engine workings as of late.

Now most normal people (Zen doesn't count, he's way off from normal, that man has big brass ones and will build an engine the night before he heads into the sunset, go Zen!) could have done this little project in probably a weeks worth of evenings (####, maybe even a whole dedicated weekend) but since I only have a few hours here and there to dedicate to it, and I temporarily have my other car back (I'm getting rid of it to become a true Vintage Daily person, but that's another story) it's taken me almost 3 now, but it should be back in an purring (and hopefully retaining all it's fluids) by this weekend.

Before: (actually in excellent running shape, but badly in need of fresh seals, 17 years sitting in someones garage does not make the seals feel warm and fuzzy)

After: While you can't notice a lot of they clean and reseal I did from the picture, you can see the addition of a new clutch and pressure plate and a resurfaced flywheel (I know the alignment tool is still in there, there's a reason for that  :tounge2: ) and I took the opportunity to beadblast and repaint the engine tin and the muffler system.  I also decided to add J-tubes for the warm season until I can get around to repairing my slightly rusty heater boxes.

Still 6v, I meant all weekend to ask you about that converter you said you had a while ago Zen, but I never got around to it.

The only complaint I really have with the 6v the way it is, is still that I only have an AM radio :music: (looking for a Sapphire II that is AM/FM and 6v if anyone has any leads)  Of course, I'd like to have a set of gauges, and maybe some vintage fog lights (I have found out that I can get H4 headlights with 6v bulbs to give me a little extra oomph in the lighting dept, as it is I ride at night with high beams since they still are not quite as bright as everyone elses normal lights), ooo, some air horns would be great.

So yeah, maybe I aught to begin pieceing together what I need to convert over the show season  :3dbigsmile: I have read that the Porsche 356's Generator is the same exact size as mine but came in 12v, but it would be quite a bit cheaper for me to get the rest of everything I need to convert (generator alone is somewhere north of $350 when I checked, guess there's a reason I don't have Porsche)

I'm actually having a little charging issue at the moment, and haven't yet deduced if it's the regulator, generator (brushes maybe) or if I fried the battery somehow, but it's kinda intermittent.
