Please help get my '72 weekender back on the road

Greetings,
     This is Stuart Neil, some of you may remember me.  Anyway,  my bus has be out of action for about 3years or so.  Anyway, I want her back on the road.  Daisy (my bus) is a '72 weekender.  She is having exhaust stud trouble, specifically, several of the studs are pulled out of the head.  What is the chepest fix.  I am thinking about using time-serts to repair the holes.  Does anyone have a timesert kit for the exhaust studs?  If so, then I will only need to buy the inserts.  I also have several other issues to deal with, but the exhaust in the most important.
     Well, it's good to be getting back into the VW world.  I really want to drive my bus again.  Please help.

Good to hear from you again Stuart!  For those of you who don't know him, Stuart was one of the original Volks Folks.  He was there at our first meeting.  He also lives near LaFayette!  All of us LaFayette area folks need to get together and try to get our various VWs problems worked out.  Maybe we could even talk Ret.Bugtech to come give us advice . . . or just stand back and watch and laugh!   8)

David, I talked to Stuart the other night on the phone.  None of the studs are broken off, they have just pulled out of the heads.  Seems like I've fixed a type 1 head with a step stud before . . . but I don't know anything 'bout these type 4 engines.  What's the best way to fix these?

Zen, Unless someone has made a "step-up " within the last couple of years, I don`t think there is such a "critter". I sure could have used some  
a few years back. I have installed Heli-Coils and gone back to original size. I have forgotten the size of the orig. 8x125 ?    I belive the size of the o.s. stud for the type 1 was 8x125 to 10x125(150 ?) Im getting to the point that I can`t remember anything anymore. Like I said before, maybe some people are making the "step-up now . I don`t recall installing a Heli-coil was any worse than drilling/ tapping for a OS stud, but I had a nice Lift to work under.

By the way, I didn`t mention that the type 4 stud is quite a bit longer, so even the Zenmeister can`t  make a type 1 work. Whoops!! maybe I shouldn`t have said that. :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

I've never had any luck with Heli-coils.  But then, I've never tried them on any VW application.  I've tried to use them on a Buick engine a many moons ago . . . I don't remember now exactly what was stripped, but I remember the heli-coil only held a few days.  I also tried to repair a stripped out bar stud on a Stil chain saw many years ago . . . that didn't work too good either.  I was probably way too much torque on them though . . . that's probably why I stripped studs out to begin with.

What about a case saver . . . Drill and tap it to M12, install a case saver for M8 studs?  How much metal do you have to work with on a type 4 head?  I don't think there is enough "meat on the bone" to use them on a type 1 . . . and like I said, I know nothing 'bout a type 4.  I need to learn though.  I've got a 411 if I ever clear out a place in the yard so I can drag it home.

Don`t think you have enough " meat on the bone" for a M-12.  Time-sert type might work. I don`t know. I think Heli-coil is going to be the answer. I haven`t had any problems with them ,but I do prefer some kind of insert or OS stud.

I'm not sure what you are fixing.  but if its like an exhaust manifold.
I have found that JP weld will fix almost anything when you have run out of options.  use it like gasket paste.  Or fill it in a stripped bolt hole ,  wait 4 seconds and screw the bolt in.  . not too tight    Its quick. its easy,  and if it holds.  it will hold a long time.  If it does not work,   your out 6 bucks.  SC
