Patch Heat Exchangers

« on: March 23, 2010, 10:58:17 AM »
Does anybody know where I can get a patch kit for my heat exchangers? I saw something mentioned about one in an old forum but I can’t seem to find anything online. My girlfriend keeps complaining about the exhaust fumes when I turn the heat on and I’ve received an ultimatum, fix the heater boxes or purchase a mining canary (for safety) or no more bus rides.  I’ve looked at the new heat exchangers and the cheapest I’ve found them is $129 each. Does anyone know of any way I can patch these heater boxes cheaply. I tried to use some heat resistant tape but the hole was two big and eventually blew it loose.   I picked up some J-tubes a while back but I would rather keep the heat if possible. I know it’s warming up so I could probably put this off another year but I’d appreciate any ideas-suggestions.

Thanks,

The only "patch kits" I am familiar with are for the heat exchangers are nothing more than pipe extensions. (i.e. for external exhaust leaks at the muffler flange)  If you get the fumes / smell inside, the pipe is most likely rotting back in the exchanger, remedied by replacing it.  And, be cautious what you are buying... Danish / German stuff only, not the repop empi taiwan / china junk.
