Parking Brake stuck...or worse!

« on: October 20, 2009, 04:06:27 PM »
1970 Bug has been sitting in carport for 3 years!  New battery and it starts and idles perfectly...problem is it won't move!  Reverse engages, but seems like parking brake is stuck or something else is stuck :?  "Stuck" feeling come from front and seems to be on driver's side???  Any help would be great as we are thinking about selling :(

Here is one trick that works sometimes. Its worth a try and I have done it and gotten away with it.  Take the hub cap off and get a large hammer and give the drum/ lug bolts a big wack several times (not the center bearing cap)  Sometimes rust, dirt gets between the brake shoe and the drum and locks things down.

^^^^ what he said, i have also had ones that sat (usually longer than that though) where the shoe material comes off of the backing, and lodges in the drum surface.  Those are not so easy to undo, but will sometimes free up by rocking the car forwards and back.

Otherwise, commence hammer based whacking.

Yep ! Have had that happen also. I'm dealing with a '67 bug right now that can't get here because all 4 wheels are locked. I suspect that this has happen on this Cherry little car thats been parked in a carport for 10 + years and hasn't been started or moved. There is a sad story behind this as I have known the owner for 40 years. I'm trying to figure what to do next. Levitation is out of the picture

cant remember her name at the moment, i only started there on monday and have talked to her once.  she was talking about her 67, and the 73 things She also said she needed to get the 67 to who from what i gathered was you. I planed on talking to her more today, but i had to take the browns to the super bowl and it went into over time, and then it was after time to leave so i ran for the door!
