Panel between gas tank and engine compartment - '78 Bus

« on: December 07, 2005, 01:00:32 AM »
Is there a trick to remove this thing?  I removed the six (6) screws that hold it to the frame and loosened (a little) the three (3) tabs at the top that hold the panel in place.  I did not remove any of the relays or vacuum thingie on the panel.  These are not screwed into something behind the panel, are they?  Also, there seems to be a foam seal between the panel and body...which also might be glued in place.

I want to remove it because I removed the circular piece of metal covering what I think is an access panel for the fuel filler and computer and saw (or actually, felt) that a hose on the evaporative line is missing.  I want to see if anything else needs to be checked on while the engine is out.

Maybe I'm just not pulling on it hard enough.

Travis, I don't think there is anything else behind the panel that would not allow you to pry the thing off . Try not to tear up the seal if possible. I guess you can buy a new one if it does fall apart. If you are going to go to the trouble of yanking the thing off, I belive I would take a close look at all the hoses, filler pipe stuff, fuel gauge sender etc. If you have my kind of luck, everything thing would spring a leak or fall apart just because I thought of it and didn't check it out while I had the chance.

Travis, there are two screws that go in from the bottom (1 on each side) I'm not sure how many screws there are all together but if all the screws came out of the face you are still missing those two.

What Herb said. There's one on each side above the bellhousing. They're a shoulder-deep reach when going in from underneath. Probably not so bad with the engine out, though. A lot of folks choose not to replace them because of this, but what are the odds you'll have to pull the panel twice? Not as good as the odds of it vibrating and making a racket without the screws!

I found them.  Haven't taken them out, though.  Thanks for the info, guys!
