Oops... Uh... Help?

« on: June 18, 2012, 05:04:53 PM »
Hi all.  I usually take Sweetpea in when somethings not working right because I am afraid that I might screw something up.  Well, I didn't and I think I might have...

I've been having starting problems for a while and usually roll her off.  I replaced the hot start relay and it didn't fix the problem.  At first when I turned the key i would light up and hear the fuel pump relay.  Turning it over I would just get nothing.  Although every once and a while it would start.  I've been putting it off but finally decided to drop in a new starter from bus depot.  It showed up and right away I noticed that the solenoid only had one tab as opposed to two tabs on the one on my bus.  Still, I should be able to splice what would have gone between two tabs to the one tab on the new starter, right?  Well, I tried it...
Unfortunately, now I get nothing when I turn the key.  I noticed that the fuse in the hot start relay has blown.  Now I have a new starter, but I get nothing at all from anything.  The battery reads voltage.  What did I do?  I hooked everything up just as it was before except for the tabs being down to one on the new solenoid.  Am I screwed?  Did I fry everything?  I didn't see sparks but am also a little afraid to make it worse.  Then again, what is worse than nothing?

I was busy at work all week and didn't have time to get back to her until today.  Great news, she's back!

I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting anything and started thinking maybe I reversed the battery leads.  I know I am not that stupid, but I really put that to the test trying to troubleshoot.  First I recharged the battery because I hadn't driven her in a month before the starter swap.  Then I used a Fluke to verify that I was around 12VDC.  Still nothing at the key, though.  Then I redid my solder connection where I was splicing two leads into one connector on the new solenoid.  Still nothing.  Then I removed every lead going to the solenoid and cleaned and wire brushed them and reinstalled.  Still nothing.  The funny thing is  that to get my soldering station up under there I had to find a three prong extension.  I'm at work and most of the ones here have the prong broken off except the one with a shop light.  So I took that light under there to plug in my soldering iron.  I still  couldn't see anything out of place until I started tracing the cables.  I had someone jiggle the lead of the battery and...

Duh.  Way up above the starter I saw the missing lead...  I thought that the five leads attached to the solenoid (+) side was surely everything.  Not so. The main supply from the battery (a black cable) was hiding back in the shadows.  I doubt I would have seen it if I hadn't have had to use the extension cord with the shop light!

So, all's well that ends well.  She's starting and running GREAT again!

There was no core return on the old starter.  Anyone want it?
