Same motor I had in the 67 just a few changes:
1641 cc
mahle forged 87mm pistons
Stock crank and rods
Balanced and lightened flywheel
Cb Performance equalizer pulley system
Bigvalve(40mm) SP heads.
HD valve springs, solid shaft rockers, elephant feet adjusters
Scat C-35 cam
Zenith NDIX single carb with manuel choke

Not a speedster by any means but will climb any hill with ease.
Way more solid pulling motor than the 1641 with duel carbs and way easier to tune. Not to mention not as loud.
Next motor 1904 SP. I'm really hooked on this Zenith set up and I've tried many different carb setups.

This motor was born from a few conversations with The Godfather. Instead of building the 1800 I built the smaller version and will now build the big brother of the same design for the 67.

Scott,  You are very close. Can you say 76mm stroker with Decked 87's or "machined in"   88-90 mm stroker pistons ?  You already have the "other" stuff.    I had a hunch you would like that Zenith.  I love them as a single carb set up. Soooooo simple to deal with. I bet this SP set up would have a lot of Grunt on the bottom end along with desent fuel mileage to boot. I'm kicking this idea around myselve for Albert deAllison
Reinhart would then get the 1600 stocker. :-k  :-k

The 76 crank will be the next motor I've already got the case, heads and pistons ready. I never relized what a lil beast of a motor I had put together until I put the Zenith on. It's a lil stump puller ,and it makes those nice lump lump cam sound now. :D

Zeniths have been poppin up all over Samba for cheap!!! I'll Keep an eye open for another with the manuel choke for ya. Why would anyone want to mess with duels when they have these???Thanks for the tip big guy.

I did a lil home work the 76 crank with 85.5 is a 1745. Same as the mileage motor in Hot VW's. Build it David, Albert will love you for it and the homework is already done on it in the magazine. Just get SP heads and a Zenith and your done. :D

The 76 crank with 90.5's is what I want(1904) I have some of the stuff just gotta get another set of SP heads worked up for 90.5's. Better go water my money tree.

Oh they are fun alright, but you know something funny and kind of strange ?
I got into a all out freeway race with a well built 2180 a number of years ago .  This guy was in a '67 as I was, but I only was running a DP 1600. We had slowed down to about 30 mph and then we jumped on them . He just blew me off.  But here is the strange part .This guy slowed down to about 70 to let me catch up after about 1 mile.  I had run out of numbers on my speedo ,but the needle was on the turn signal indicator .  We took off again in 4th and get this , I kept up with him until I was back on the turn signal light and he pulled
off from me very slowly. as it turned out he was only about 5 mph faster than I was at top end.  He told me later that he was flat out . Strange huh.
He would just blow my doors off if we were having a  stoplight drag race.

I got wiped out by a Ghia one day. I was driving my brand new '67 Bug  and just got out run. We both pulled into a service station . I asked him what he was running in his Ghia . He opened the deck lid and low and behold sat a very greasy 36 hp engine.  Well !  Aero stuff I guess

Horse power, only goes so far afterall. Gearing can mean alot. @ cars with the same gear box like you described will do just what you said. From a stand still he would smoke ya just like the 30mph roll start. But at top end your gear limited he'll win but not by much. Now a big motor if built right can turn alot more RPM's so......When my 67 was all juiced up with 88's and duel carbs my pals 56 oval stayed right with it on the free way no problem.  A big motor in a Ghia with Freeway flyer set up is a fast lil varmitt to mess with. My step dads Ghia is bone stock and that lil bugger will fly. Ah there all slow by modern standards but aint it fun?

It's been so long since I drove a bug with a carburetor that I had forgotten how simple and empty looking the engine compartment was!
