Oil sump pan question.

« on: April 22, 2008, 11:35:58 PM »
Was just wondering if the oil sump pan on my 1969 beetle can be replaced without pulling the engine like most other cars oil pans. Mine has a small crack right at the area where it goes up against the transmission. It is not a big crack by any means but drips a little after i have driven it and the oil is hot. Or is there anything that i can seel the crack with?

Do you have an aftermarket deep sump bolted on the bottom of the engine or, are you talking about a crack in the bottom of the case?  A deep sump comes off easy.  If it doesn't have a deep sump and the crack is in the case, you've got problems.  Are you sure it's a crack and not just a seap or leak somewhere running down and dripping from the bottom?

it is a normal case. as for the crack i have had it up on the ramps and my eyes see a very small hair line crack at the edge as it goes from the flat bottom and the side goes up. I have taken a rag and wiped off the oil and it just seems to slowly come back. The engine runs fine and does not over heat and i just need to put about a 1/2 quart of oil in it every month or so. So this is a big problem then huh.....

Hmmm,  Strange place for a crack to show up unless it got wacked on the road or sump'n.    When you say "side", are you talking about under the push rod tube area or between the engine case and tranny?  Which side?
Driver side, pass. side ?    These leaks can be like leaks in your roof. They start in a one place and show up 10' away.  After you clean it off,how long does it take to show up again ?    Worse hot or cold ?
Without looking at it in the flesh its hard to say.

the crack is where the case meets the tranny right in the middle of the sumps edge. Looks like a strike on the road or speed bump. As for how long it takes to drip out again after wiping it off, it takes about 2 or 3 minutes. However it does not pour out. The oil just comes out to the edge and stays there unless i run the car and the oil heats up. So oil is cold it does not drip, oil is warm it will very slowly drip till cooled off. In the the 1 year i have had the beetle i have only had to put about 2 quarts of oil in it. However i only drive it a couple days a week till my little girl gets out of school this summer and then it will be more than that.

That is a pretty tough area of the case even with a bump.   I'm only guessing but I would just about bet you have a rear main seal seeping and not a crack in the case. You can pull the engine and flywheel to replace the seal if the crankshaft/main doesn't have excessive endplay. I would check it out pretty soon before the oil gets to the clutch.  You can grab the belt pulley and push/pull and see if you have alot of endplay. You should feel a very little bit of play. You should feel it more than seeing it .  ( .07 - .12 mm)

I have a little room in the basement that I could spare for you to pull the engine if you need to.  We would have to bring Ret.Bugtech up in the pope mobile so that he could check our work.  :D

Ain't  no thang !!   All it will cost is a jug of adult beverage  and a good chair and I will supervise my butt off.  I just love to watch someone else do all the grunt work for a change
I would say bring it to my place but you would be about 10th in line. #1 is Albert deAllison ,MY BUGGY and I'm going to finish him up before I do a another thing plus I will be building a garage finally.
Pope Mobile ?  That would be cool !!   I can do all the hand jesters sometimes  with all five fingers
