I think you need to check your vintage fuel lines. You must be on fire and don't know it.  Heat in a vintage Bug ?  What a thought !!

My Heat exchangers are in good condition. So there's no smelly burnt oil smell.....and it doesn't matter if you pull your warm air through or let the stock set up do the work, if your exchangers are bad, your gonna get the smoke!

Good job Joe, Those inline blowers are a great improvement over the old "Squirrel cage" outfit we used long ago.  If I remember correctly we used blowers off '55-'56 Fords. This was before anybody came up with a "kit"
I belive I saw the "how to" in a copy of  "Foreign Car Guide" years ago. People had to keep a bottle of Windex in the car to clean the oil off the windows when all they had was the "Dirty Air" heater boxes. But you were warm. Every time you hit standing water or drove in a driving rain you had a sauna bath.  Who said driving a Bug back then wasn't a trip

I have heard all kinds pros and cons on that. How long has the engine been run on non-det. oil ?   Or do we know ? This I can tell you.
I was working at a service station when I was in highschool and a guy came in with a '54 Ford with a OHV 6 cly engine that he bought at a TVA Fleet auction. The car had about 65,000 miles on the clock and he had owned and driven it about 1000 miles with no problems. He wanted all the fluids changed. My Dad worked for TVA and told me that when TVA bought the cars new that they changed the oil at 1500 miles. After that they never changed oil again. They would change the oil filter and add a qt. of non-det. 30 W oil. The cars were auctioned off after 60,000 miles.
When I took the drain plug out I had to take a screw driver and dig the goop out enough to where the oil would drain out. The Station owner put a mixture of ATF, kerosine, Hi-Det 30 oil in and ran the engine at a ldle for about an hour. You should have seen what fell out of that engine.
I was then told to change the filter and put in 5 QTs of 30w HD oil and send him down the road. The engine blew up in about 500 miles. The owner said the engine started to make a "funny" noisy" at about 400 miles but he kept driving it until it locked up.
In your case , I don't really know what to tell you. What did your oil strainer look like when you changed oil ?

Like I said before, How much crud does the strainer/plate have on it ?
Another thing you could look at is the inside the valve covers and how cruddy the rocker arms are.  They all will have some build-up due to not having a oil filter. If everything looks normal where you don't have to use a scraper to find the rocker arms or the strainer plate doesn't have a
1/2 inch of crud on it, I would be tempted  to use HD 20-50.
I'm not there so its your call.  I just don't know anybody that runs non-det oil in their cars except Smelly-Cat who runs anything slick as long as he doesn't run out of old paint strainers and Momma's old nylons to filter out the rocks, small children and chunks of rod bearing pieces

Bugtech,  I went to fill the oil today.  Did you ever notice the the ATF blue walmart jug looks just like the Motor oil blue walmart jug? .  I never noticed that  until  I poured about 2 cups of  bright red ATF into my crank case.  I hope  that its not too bad for Stupie.  Then I added a quart or 2 of correct oil.  Now I have  pink brown 10wsomething.   SC

Dang !!    ATF   I think is about  5-10 Weight extremely high det. oil. I don't think 2 cups worth will hurt much although its a form of hydraulic oil and does not have the same protection properties as engine oil. In your case,I think Stupey will just hemorrhage a little more than normal, more than likely in living color.
As far as the color of the jugs, I never have noticed because I don't use that "stuff" and yeah I have already heard that oil is oil .

I can tell you from experiance that ATF fluid in the crankcase will spit-shine the inner workings of an engine.  Start it up, run it around the block and then CHANGE YOUR OIL . . . and screen.  Or you can just leave the ATF in there for the long haul (or not-so-long haul) and you'll have one of the cleanest engines around (internally anyway).   That will make it little less messy when you have to rebuild it in a few hundred miles.

I went for drive today.  Been a week since I ran the engine and it turned over a bunch of times but finally caught.  Probaly the ATf was thickin up the the oil... I think I'm onto something that will make me some serious dough.  "Motor Oil Colorant"  MY oil drips are pink now and I can tell were   I have parked.   MY plan is to invent a formula that will color  oil .  Ill dump bright orange dye in the crank case and see how many parking lots I can mark with Stupie.  People will look at the oil stains color and say " hey! Stupie was here"
Maybe even grid out the the Walmart parking lot and play bingo with my self.
