sure it can be done with any jack... But after Mike brought me his motorcycle jack to install my new type 4, I found a new love for those things... never have to worry about yanking on the engine and having it pop loose and tip off the jack.... nice flat surface for it to sit on... and the engine went in like magic...

Wow, guys you are all too kind. I didn't get to spend as much time on the bus as I wanted to this weekend. But I did nab an ATV jack from Harbor Freight so I'm all good there.
I also disconnected and labeled all my wiring and got it out of the way. The oil has been drained and I'll put the sump plate back on to protect the threads holding the sump plate.
The bolts I could find/see have been sprayed with liquid wrench. If I can get out of the office at a decent time tonight I hope to yank the engine out of there.

74Loaf, Thanks for the offer and I may take you up on it if my solo attempts fail. with all the info I've gotten from you guys and the manuals I've read I'm pretty confident I can do this.  8)

As always I'll keep you posted.

A word of caution here.  If you choose to pull the engine without the tranny you will have to have some support for the tranny as there's NO REAR mount on the tranny . You have the mount on the front of the tranny but the rear (bell housing) is held up by the engine cross brace (by the muffler). If you remove the engine and let the tranny fall you WILL destroy the shift coupler and maybe damage the inner CV joints plus the front mount . This applies for 68-71 vans only. 72 up vans have a 2 bolt hanger on top of the  tranny to hold the tranny up.  Seeing that you are doing this on the ground I would pull the whole works together leaving the engine and tranny bolted together.  It will take you longer but at least the dang thing won't fall and get you Kill't  :o.   This is about the most cantankious(?)labor wise  thing you will have to deal with on that van. I would replace every seal I could get to while you are there. Make dang sure that the cooler itself is not your leak and not just the seals. I think I would spring for a new cooler just to be safe . Remember it a long way back in there if you don't get it right the first time. >:(

So I was able to get one of those ratcheting tie downs hooked up in the frame to support the trans and then removed the two lower bolts on the engine. Now I can't seem to get the top two loose. I did manage to bloody my knuckles pretty good tho. ;)

So when my frustration level got the best of me I came in to cool off and found the Godfathers post. Heading back outside to put those two bolts back in. ;D ;D
