oil in my head

« on: July 23, 2008, 07:22:15 PM »
went to check my valves today, and pulled off the cover to find almost half a cup of oil in my  cyl 1,2 head, the other head only had a bit, like normal. i do park on a bit on an incline but that seems really high.  all the valves check out to be close, anywhere from .005-.007.  also there was some metallic shimmer to the oil...  any thoughts before i start pulling it apart... can i drive it five miles to where i would like to pull it apart.

The incline might explain the excessive oil behind the cover, what makes me a bit more concerned is this "metallic shimmer".  Have you been hearing any of those nasty noises lately?  Been using oil?  (more than normal, if that be the case?)  double check the tightness of the rocker arm shafts, I've seen several of those in the last year where the nuts have backed off allowing the shaft assembly to move around.  Common sense should apply to all of this.  Safe to drive????  dunno.  An engine can go from nuthin to holy crap in under 5 seconds, but again, you should usually see some sort of sign first.   One last thing, check the metallic shimmer with a magnet, no attraction, aluminum, clumps up on the magnet, it's steel.

heard a little noise yesterday after i adjusted my timeing down a bit yesterday, so i decided that id check my valves to day, but it didnt sound like that side of the engine, not that i can hear to well. the other head really didnt look to have and shimmer to it, but it only had a few drips of oil to tell by. the intake valve on cyl 2 is adjusted out farter than the rest, but its been that way for a while. as for the magnet test... i used a wand magnet... all i had around, but it did pick up a few bits here and there. i think alot of the shimmer stayed on the head cover when i pored it into a jar....

Also if you are close to a oil change you can take a close look at the oil strainer plate . You are bound to see some "stuff" on the surface. If you see some copper or brassy looking stuff you might be headed toward some problems.

David's comment about the strainer plate reminds me.  Is this an upright or later (type 4) engine that we're talking about?

here are some pictures and info.

pulled off the head to see if more oil had pooled there, and it seemed that it had. pured most of the oil out and heres a picture of some metal flakes in the cover.

Decided to drain the oil, and check inside a bit.

pulled the drain cover to find crap in it. looks like fine metal, and peices of something. maybe a shim...

dosnt look good, but i didnt see anything brassy.

Is that stuff aluminum ?    Stick a magnet on it.  It might be from a piston skirt. Has this engine ever dropped a valve or burned up a piston and was" patched" up without spliting the case ?  Just a guess. :-k  :-k

I must agree, looks kinda like a chunk o' ring and the fine suff looks like aluminum.  Magnet time.

burnt a piston march of last year... so sounds about right. as for the metal  seems to be magnetic, but may be a mix.
