Oil filters

« on: June 10, 2008, 07:27:33 PM »
I just changed my oil in a toyota,  The oil was dark and yucky.  Inside the the oil filter is was dry clean and shiny.  I have never changed an oil filter and there was no oil inside the the old filter.  Is that weird?  SC

I have only heard of this in one other case and it involved using a late model 302 ford filter on an ancient 302/289 ford engine.  The rubber covered up the out put ports of the engine thus causing backpressure and blowing the seals.
In your case I think that either the screen pick up on the engine is pluged completely up and not pumping, I think that your light would have come on.  OR you have a passive oil system and you have the wrong filter.
Just a thought, I hope that it is the latter instead of the former...
How long did you run it this way?
-good luck,
KC

I am going to FLa so the oil filter autopsy has to wait.   I'm storing the part in the freezer to prevent decay, so I can  do a transplant.,   sc

What kind of Toyota? Which engine?  Not too uncomon to see a filter with no oil on some of the 4cyl. engines. I have changed the oil on MANY Toyota's that had little to no residue in the filters. I always just figured it was drain back due to the location and angle on the block.

That might be the case,   It seemed mighty weird.  I always thing there is oil in the paper filter that settles between the filter media and the case of the filter.
I am thinking there is not paper filter in the oil filter and that let all th oil run back into the pan

There was an error while liking
