Oil Filter/Pump Question For Aircooled

« on: March 28, 2009, 05:07:37 PM »
I have noticed on many online aircooled parts stores that they sell an aftermarket oil pump adapter with spin on oil filter for most of the type 1 engines. I've been told that these work well as an upgrade as opposed to the original filtering system which most of the time leaves way too much debris and gunk circulating in the engine unless you change the oil every 2000 miles. Do any of you guys have any comments on your experience with these filtering systems?  I have included some photos of a Gene Berg System for Type III's and a link to a similar system.  Many thanks folks for the advice.

I don't have any experiance with external filter/coolers, but speaking from what I've heard from everyone else over the years -- If it comes from Gene Berg and your wallet can stand the hit, it's probably a good system.  If it says EMPI or it's made in China, India or Brazil, I'd recommend sticking to regular oil changes.

I'm gonna second that, Chris.  The empi stuff is kinda poo, and just about guaranteed to leak.  The stock system works, but Gene Berg is da man when it comes to add-on legitimate improvements.  like Zen said, if your wallet can stand it....

Dont buy an empi add on filter unit...they are really crap!
That Berg Full flow is an awesome setup but is alot easier to do before the case is assembled. You can do it afterwards but it's just a bit harder. If you want the cheaper add on option CB Performance makes one like the empi but alot nicer.

I have used the CB unit and was happy with it.  The only thing that I have run into is SOME not all of these pump/filter units cannot be used with the stock exhaust system. Some are even tight on space when used with headers. The Berg system is fine if you want to put up with the hassle of running hoses and mounting the filter somewhere plus the high price.

Haven't had a problem with the add on filters with stock exhaust but you'll play He** if your looking for an aftermarket exhaust to go with one. If your gunna use a trick header or fancy aftermarket exhaust then full flow with the berg is the way to go. Just get ready to empty your wallet.

Well that leaves one more question.  Where and how would you mount the filter itself?

most people elect to mount them in the engine area, against a wall / etc... of course, a bit more tricky with a notch, need to look and see where you might fit one in there.
