Get a copy of "Hot VWs" mag. and ck the ads.   A lot of vendors have them.  Joe may have them in Cleveland, Lamar in Dalton,
There are the types that have the filter mounted remotly (not on the engine)  and the ones that are part of the oil-pump.  You have to replace the oil pump to use these types.   The info you need is: Do you have a "flat" gear camshaft or a "dish" gear camshaft. You will have to remove your oil pump to find out what you have.  The wrong pump would spell big time trouble . Some brands of these pumps can not be used with a stock muffler. No clearance. The bottom line is to talk to the vendor and tell him what you have.  The pump/filter is the simplest to use and install.
Your original '71 case would have had the "dish gear, but after all these years who knows what has happened with the engine.

If you filter oil through a GOOD filter, it's going to come out of the filter cleaner than it went in.  The cleaner the oil, the better it will do it's job . . . BUT, be careful.  There are some really, really junky filter pumps out there.  A friend of mine bought one that didn't fit tight in the case . . . guess what . . . a new engine - no oil pressure.  Put the old used stock pump back on and he had great oil pressure.  I don't care how clean or slick the stuff is, if you don't actually pump the oil through the bearings, you might as well leave the sump cover off the engine and don't bother putting any oil in it!

If you put a filter pump on it, spend the money on a good one . . . run from anything labled EMPI unless it's NOS from the 60's or 70's back when EMPI was EMPI and not the Chinese or Brazilian junk that company calling its self EMPI sells today.

If you just keep it stock and only run the screen (it's main job is to keep rocks out of the oil pump), you'll do OK if you change your oil on a regular basis.  If you change it out every 1500-2000 miles, your engine will still hold up for a LONG, LONG time.  I know someone who has a 1967 Beetle that's approaching 300,000 miles (as in 290,000+) and the case has never been split.  It's worn out . . . but just think, the last person to see the main bearings was a German assembly line worker over 40 years ago.  This engine has never seen a filter, but it has seen a LOT of oil changes.

Stock is good.  Just be sure to clean your strainer everytime you change oil.  I always thought  they left the center drain plug out of the strainer plate in the later Type-1  engines to force you to take it off and clean it.
I have seen  strainers plugged up so bad that they just about covered the oil pick-up tube cutting off the oil supply. Thats about the time people showed up at my shop " on the hook" with a engine that now has " Positive flow-thru"  ventilation.
Bottom line ?   Change your oil and clean the dang strainer when you are supposed to.  I know,I know its a pain in the Butt laying in the dirt on a piece of cardboard, jacked up on a couple of cracked concrete blocks with oil running down your elbow groping around in the dirt trying to find that 10mm nut you dropped only to come up with a Rat Snake who just stopped by to see what all the cussing was about.

I change my oil all the time.  about a tablespoon every time I drive it some where.  So I figure I will never have to change the oil since it leaks out faster than it gets dirty.  SC

Correct, the oil pump-mounted filter will NOT work with a stock exhaust unless you can find a Mexican-spec exhaust (which may not be that hard, but you'd have to have the late 70s heater boxes, so still more trouble than its worth).

My heater levers have  skull and cross bones on them  to warn me not to use them. The  carbon monoxide and the burning oil smoke will kill an average human in 15 minutes. It does takes care of any insect or critter infestation as a side benefit.    Those Germans thing of everything.

Its gonna be a long cold winter for me too.  SC

Well Duh !!!!    Why don't you Guys stop bitching and fix your heaters. Granted they won't burn you up ,but you can have some heat.

Hey Scott, I don't think you have to worry about fat girls " hittin" on you. I have heard that fat girls prefer Real Men over juvenile delinquents with a tatoo on their butt.
Maybe you need to find a couple of fat girls to ride to work with you to keep you warm. Then you won't have to worry about fixing your heaters.

Naw it dont sting much. Fat girls need love too, just not from me. I dont have any tats on my butt. If I did I think A nice portrait would do. A face does come to mind.
I figure I'll get bored soon and pull the motor for no good reason. That'll give me room to fix the trans mount and while I'm at it pull that damn pump and install my heat. If that dont work I was thinkin of usin my car as an imigrant taxi. 6 or 8 of them should keep it toasty.

Hey Bigdummy,  No stinging here. This is what Scott and I and a few others do. This is what makes our forums interesting. Some of our new folks think we will meet on a dusty street at high noon with our muskets loaded and on full cock.  Nobody is spared here.  Sometimes things get a little slow so we "prime the pump" and see what pops up so jump in here.

Hey Scott, I really didn't think you had a tatoo on your butt. As many times you have showed you "arse" to the whole wagontrain nobody ever noticed one.  A portait ???   I thought you liked Grasshopper( Ricky) better than that
