Oil filler tube... what gasket? type 4 motor

« on: November 28, 2008, 10:28:24 AM »
so it looks like I might have an oil leak somewhere around the oil filler tube and I'm trying to find out exactly where it is. I just replaced the rubber dipstick boot but the bottom of the oil filler tube continues to be covered in oil. When I first put the oil filler tube on, I used the thick paper (?) gasket that came with the install kit, but I also noticed that the kit came with a metal crush gasket and I'm hoping I used the right one. I'm also thinking that the oil might be leaking out around the 2 bolts that hold the oil filler tube on, considering I didnt use any sealant or anything on the bolts when I put the nuts on them to hold it on. Anyone have any ideas?

Its just enough of an oil leak to annoy me when the oil coats the heater box and starts smoking.....

Thanks!

Is your engine running a wire control thermostat  and the little pulley on the side of the case close to the filler tube ?   If the pulley is not there , make sure that the little screw hole that held the pulley on has a bolt in it. This hole is drilled through the case and does leak pretty if left open.

ah thats an idea! I didnt see any oil dripping from that hole, but there is oil allover the back of my alternator as well, so that might be a reason how the oil got up there if it came from that hole! I will bolt the pulley on later and see if that fixes it. but I'm guessing I did use the right gasket for the oil filler tube, right?

That little hole is above the  oil level and would not leak .  Its when the engine is running that the oil blows out the hole due to internal crankcase pressure.

yea I took the pulley off of the old motor and looked down the hole .... and saw where its opened right up to the inside.... why did they do this?? I'm hoping this solves my problem once and for all.

Now if I could just figure out why my alternator light goes off at idle, and gets brighter as the motor rpm's increase. I have a meter hooked up to the cig. lighter, and it shows upwards of almost 16 volts while driving.

Why did they do it ?     Good question.   I question why they did a lot of weird things on the Type-4 engine. Sort of like the way they mounted the bolt for the oil strainer cover.  I belive it torques to 8-9 inch pounds only. You over tighten the dang thing and you run a good chance of breaking the  center camshaft bearing saddel inside the case. Not a good thing
