PRETTY SURE THE OIL COOLER SEAL ARE LEAKING ON MY THING, WAS WONDERING IF I COULD GET THE FAN SHROUD OUT WITHOUT REMOVING THE ENGINE?  Oil is pouring out from under the shroud on the drivers side near the dist

Beetle.... yes....

Bus, Thing... no...

You've rebuilt engines on new stuff.  Quit your whining and take that thing out.   :P

I also pull the engine out on a Bug.  I can have the engine out and the fan shroud and cooler off before you can jerk the carb, deck lid hinges out of the way and pull, jerk to get it out.  And its a lot easer to find the 13mm nuts/washers when you drop them under the jug cover because you can't see what you are doing . Be sure you replace all 4 seals.  I know you know this .Put the cooler on the base , then bolt the whole thing on the block. You can't put the cooler on if you put the base on first (dog house only)

there does not look like that much room above the fan shroud, this may be engine pulling time, i did get it in the garage, i have never done the oil cooler seals, i usaully ended up blowing the motor before anything like seals leaking occured.  I am think that there are seals against the block and the oil cooler itself comes apart and has seals

2 seals on the block, 2 seals between base and the cooler. All 4 seals are the same.  3 10mm nuts/washers hold the cooler to the base and 3 13mm nuts/washers to the block. No big deal. ;D

got the engine out, it took about 45 minutes, that included chasing after the dog, stopping to let someone pick up their car, tending to the 5 year old

Which one do you need? I think I have some but they all look a little different. I'll check tonight.

Ah, I got confused on the whole front/rear thing. I'm not sure if I have one of those. If I did, it'd have holes in it.

I'll still look, sometime...

Are you talking about the BREAST PLATE behind the crankshaft pulley ? If so there are several styles and they need to match the back pan or you will have to use a back pan to match the breast plate. You have to remove the pulley to install the breast plate. There is no tin in front of the Gen. pulley.
I would install heater boxes(same as Beetle) and get some heat. Driving a '74 Thing in the winter without some kind of heat is worse than driving a van in the winter as you have no insulation anywhere. Now would be a good time to do this now that the engine out.

IT HAS SOME HID AWAY HEADERS, NOT SURE IF THEY WOULD FIT, I THOUGHT ABOUT GETTING ONE OF THE BUDDY HEATERS,  i did not mean gen pully, i meant crank pulley,  it is the tin that goes in front of the crank pully that the heater pipes and the risers go though

Thats the BACK PAN. The '74 Thing had the same heating system as the '70s Bug.  The pan that Nick shows is a Fuel Injected Type 1 or maybe a '73 Thing with the gas heater. It should work on your '74 as long as you don't try to make it into a fresh-air   heater (Bug).

Oh ,  If you have the original fan housing with the fresh air outlets, be sure you block those off good.
